It's late where I am right now and I'm completely beat. Will try to give those a listen somewhere tomorrow.

You really should. From the third album on they were firmly of the later era thrash bands, but the first two albums were pure early to mid-80s metal. I don't know if that's even gonna mean anything to a non-thrash fan, but it was simply a different era that was ****ing awesome.

Hell Awaits is arguably closer to black metal than thrash metal. Or at least, black/death/thrash metal.

It's a thrash band on the way to being a thrashier band. It's in that same realm of early black metal and is awesome for many of the same reasons, but it's thrash.

I mean "At Dawn They Sleep" is not godlike just cause of the chaotic awesomeness, but those savage as satan riffs are pure thrash. It was probably the thrash bible till Reign in Blood.

But srsly even though I don't believe in favorite bands, I might kinda throw it to Slayer at times. They're a rare band that I can kind of listen to at most any time. But I still have periods of just rockin them hard.

I posit that Tom Araya's vocal performance on Reign in Blood is the pinnacle of extreme metal vocals because it most perfectly expresses that sense of malevolent threat that is the essence of extreme metal.
