This is a solid guide to prog metal by the way (ranking-wise). If you hate Dream Theater just skip over #12, etc.

As far as metal goes, avant-garde>progressive although not all prog metal is bad.

A lot of **** I actually dig, so I think I'll actually check some of that out. And I like that they have Empire so high. I don't know how progressive it is, but it might just be the best pop metal album ever. Even though I don't listen to much Queensryche, I still rate this album high as ****. It might be the only time a metal band truly understood how to make a pop masterpiece. And it sounds pretty space age as just a pop album as well.

Def Leppard can suck dick. Pyromania 4 life tho!

Empire is one of my favorite albums ever, no contest. It has a little bit of everything and even at its cheesiest its a lot of fun.

In regards to progressive metal from the early 90's, these guys are up there with Queensryche and Psychotic Waltz for me personally. Great sound...

The Batlord 08-01-2017 08:40 PM

Oh and I only even knew about Queensryche because I saw all their albums in my uncle's 80s metal LP collection. Was some way cool **** though and I bought Empire cause it was the only Queensryche album at Walmart. One of my first metal purchases and it's stuck with me for a decade and a half now.

Deserves legendary status.

The best progressive metal tends to be the stuff that's not labeled as "progressive metal"

Yep. The ironic thing about Empire though is that when 'Silent Lucidity' charted at #1 it helped open the way for all these other bands from Seattle to break through into the charts. Though we all know how that story went...

I think they could have had any number of hits to rival Hysteria or Appetite for Destruction on this if whatever marketing blah blah blah. This sounds like a diamond selling album tbh for whatever it's worth."Silent Lucidity" is phat as **** too, even though it should be cheesy and awful. I mean pretty much every song is a metallized pop banger.
