Darkness in a Different Light (2013) was the first Fates Warning album I ever heard that I genuinely liked. I'd only heard their first two, which are alright, but just sound like 2nd rate Maiden worship with some more complexity thrown in to fill the gaps. Then this was just cool as **** and I went back and had to change my opinion on them. At least from No Exit and on.

In regards to my comments on death metal, I've just seen countless arguments here on stuff that's all so similar ("this is bad" vs "this is good") that you end up laughing at the insularity of it.

I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
But the infinitely different answers to the question "What is brutal?" are a legitimately interesting aspect of death metal. I don't much like a lot of Norsecore black metal, but I know there's the same kind of dynamic, so I don't begrudge them their "insularity", even if I don't get it a lot of the time. But Dream Theater are just nauseating.

Night on Brocken is a lot less complex than Iron Maiden I think. I'd say it's more raw but it's probably on the same level as the first two Maiden albums

Really? I suck at judging what's complex, but at the very least they tried to sound complex.

Oh ****, I just realized I was talking about their second and third albums. Never heard the debut I guess.

Alright, I might be retracting my statement on Fates Warning's early work. This has got a cool Sabbath influence (more "Into the Void" than "Iron Man" though) that I'm digging.

But of course now I want to listen to Sabbath.

I dunno, I mean that's pretty much the best power metal album of all time

Nothing is beyond my wisdom. This is the greatest witch hunt in all of MusicBanter history. Sad!

Agreed (mostly). But hey, I was the one who changed your mind on Fates Warning a few years ago (when Darkness In A Different Light made my AOTY list). Maybe you'll find something in DT's early discography you like someday.
