^ I'm not going to read that list, mainstream metal journalism is a joke and it always will be, but I like how media publications laud Black Sabbath's first few albums now. I obviously was not around when they were getting going but from my understanding, their first four albums were all but ignored by their contemporaries.

I'd actually recommend reading this one. Morbid Angel, Bathory and a bunch of others get some good praise.

It's a list. It's got the albums it has to have, misses a few it probably should, has some it shouldn't, and has a largely arbitrary order. I did notice that it seems to include albums from the same sub-genres in close proximity, as if whoever made the list was just slapping it together from off the top of his head. Oh and not nearly enough extreme metal. It feels like either Rolling Stone didn't want a list that its audience wouldn't want to listen to or the author just didn't really like extreme metal but had to have some Death and Darkthrone anyway. |
lol like it's written by one guy. I'm almost certain that the lack of extreme metal is to cater to their demographic.
It certainly exceeded expectations for a Rolling Stones list though. |
Wait it has Bathory? That's surprising. Alright, I'll read it.
EDIT: yeah this list is better than I thought it would be. Never thought I would see Entombed on this list. |

I wonder if that's a factor in how they determine what's great or not.

No Obituary, Dismember, Bolt Thrower, Deicide, Lykathea Aflame, Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Nile, Asphyx, and why the **** is there only one Death album? You don't have to be a fanboy to see that they probably only included Human cause they couldn't justify ignoring it. I'm pretty sure that list was created by people who've listened to like five death metal albums. Almost no non-Sabbath doom either. I saw Jerusalem, but I don't even think they had any Electric Wizard. No Candlemass, Reverend Bizarre, diSEMBOWELMENT, Trouble, Skepticism, Katatonia, My Dying Bride, or Cathedral? WTF? NO ACID BATH!!! And what the **** are Body Count, Evanescence, and Avenged Sevenfold doing on that list? I'm almost surprised they didn't throw in Limp Bizkit cause the kids like that, right? It also kind of offends me that Korn is one place higher than Seasons in the Abyss tbh. Oh yeah, is Living Color even metal? It's been a million years since I listened to them but I don't ever remember thinking they were a metal band. Some odd album choices too. Morbid Tales over pretty much any other classic Celtic Frost album? Blues for the Red Sun over Welcome to Sky Valley? Kvelertak's second album? This list gets ****tier the more I think about it. |
