Definitely sprung on this album now. Cryptopsy also have some of the best breakdowns ever. @3:30 is a ****ing monster.

In my top 5 albums of all time, across genres (this and Elvenefris are the only two metal records).

It's absurd how catchy, brutal, fun, and oppressive every song manages to be.

Going through the RCA device - Colony will always remind me of being 14 and playing Tony Hawk Underground. "Embody the Invisible" was the first, but "Scorn" is arguably the best:

Due to the amount of times I heard them held up on the same tech death pedestal as Spawn of Possession, I've been avoiding Psycroptic, cause **** all that noise. Not saying I'm all about this ****, but so far The Scepter of the Ancients is surprisingly cool, badass, and catchy. And even with all the millions of riffs and tempo changes being hurled at you the band manages to keep your attention with bits and pieces all over the place that stand out and make you bob your head or bang it as appropriate.

I remember digging this album back when it came out 9 years ago, but going back to it now I'm struck by how I don't know if I've ever seen a non-core or melodeath death metal album that felt so strongly targeted toward a certain age group. Even back then I recognized that there was a pandering element to the music, but now I feel like an outsider looking in on a completely different metal headspace as much as if I were listening to Bullet for My Valentine.

^Dude, it's been so long since I've listened to Kataklysm. I wonder if I'd still like them.

I'm finding it hard to listen to other DM albums TBH. None are as savage. I think I'm gonna get high tonight and listen to Cryptopsy for several hours just like last night.
