Currently on an early-Gothenberg melodeath kick. Probably won't last long as there is so little melodic death metal that rises above decent, but the **** that is great has some absolutely epic, beautiful, yet badass riffs that update Iron Maiden perfectly.

damn this new zao record is so tight. there's some super brutal moments but also a few times where things get hella groove oriented. the cleanly sung hook on observed/observer is so catchy i just can't help myself.
might just end up on my year end list

But seriously, I don't think I've heard a melodeath album with Gothenburg riffs as gorgeous as this.

Don't get me wrong, those are cool, especially the second song, and I'm def gonna look more into the band, but they seem more like stepping stones to the majesty of The Jester Race and The Gallery, let alone Undying. Really good stepping stones, but not quite there.

Hmm. I guess I'm used to Zao being more immediate, and not so sludgy. I keep hearing **** that makes me go, "Oh **** yeah!!!", but it all doesn't quite come together as a whole yet. I'm gonna have to put this **** on repeat for a good long while before I proclaim judgement. At the very least this is one heavy ass album. Like, maybe not Electric Wizard heavy, but they have seats in the ballpark. It's also awesome that after all these years they can still evolve so much without having to throw in random, inappropriate elements just to say they are evolving. No other metalcore band sounds like Zao.
