I hardly ever listen to his earliest stuff, although it's pretty good.
He got truly great with Hvis lyset tar oss (mostly because of the epic Det som en gang var).
And then he crossed over into absolute ****ing genius legendary territory with Filosofem, which I've probably listened to more often than all other metal albums combined.

Det som is hands down my favourite black metal song. If there's a riff more hypnotizing then I've never heard it.

I get goosebumps just talking about it.

So Burzum.

Paysage d'Hiver?

It's not like I didn't spend some quality time today with Paysage D'Hiver and Blut Aus Nord.

Back to the importance of atmosphere in black metal. The feel presented on this album is mind suffocatingly dark and vast, even otherworldy. This is definitely one of the best metal releases of the year so far, a top five easily. The music is so outrageously grim and dense in a way that is simultaneously sprawling/astronomical and asphyxiating/torturous. The music here knows no bounds.

Psychedelic walls of dark red cosmic chaos, giant moons of dissonance. Check if you like the experimental Blut Aus Nord stuff

.

I have that album in my collection and I remember really digging it, but not much else. Gonna give it a spin right now.
