I never thought Dying Fetus would ever grow on me but this is definitely a lot better now than when it first came out. A lot of brutal death metal is supposed to be brutal and aggressive, but when I think of music that is supposed to express those things I think it should make me actually want to hit something. All this mindlessly techy brutal death metal doesn't do that.
But Dying Fetus is insanely chaotic with their lightning fast tempo changes and grind influences, while at the same time primitive and thuggish with their chugging riffs and breakdowns. This is the kind of brutal death metal that I would imagine pissed off dudes with a history of violent behavior would make, rather than just boring guitar nerds.

God damn it. Individual Thought Patterns was one of those albums I bought as a young Batlad that I didn't really enjoy, but was too young to be confident in criticising it, so I just assumed that I didn't "get it". So I kept listening to it off and on over the course of a year or so, convinced that eventually the album's brilliance would be revealed to me.
This did not happen. In fact, this was one of the albums that made me realize that my true taste for death metal lay in the more primitive, immediate corner of the genre. And so confuzzlement became outright distaste. Up until literally twelve minutes ago I have been perfectly happy with this opinion, and perfectly happy to **** on Individual Thought Patterns to anyone who would listen. So why the **** is this album now, not only tolerable, but ****ing badass?! I don't understand this **** at all, but **** me if this isn't kicking a fair amount of my ass. Like, seriously, this is kind of giving Scream Bloody Gore a run for its money as my fav Death album.

There are about fifty million sweet riffs on this album, all welded together at unsettling angles, like the "impossible geometry" of H.P. Lovecraft.

Yeah, they're nothing to write home about, but they work as a sort of atmospheric background noise while you focus on the music. Considering how low in the mix they are I'm assuming that's the point anyway.
