I thought the exact same thing when I listened to it again for the Survivor thread. The Blackening used to be one of my favourite metal albums four or five years ago, and even though I still enjoyed it this time around, there's definitely something about the way they handle their music that I find somewhat offputting.

I think it's that they're pretty much trying to elevate what is essentially blue collar guitar-bashing to an extent that Machine Head simply has no business trying to do. They just sound ridiculous on this album, and it only got worse as their albums progressed if I remember correctly. I think I'm gonna go back and listen to Burn My Eyes.

Slanderous still has a killer fucking riff and is proof they could of, at their best, hung with some of the better acts in groove metal. It's just when they try to add too much depth with things like the quieter passages in Now I Lay Thee Down where they almost sound like a nu-metal act that make me think less of them.

"Slanderous" is as big an offender as any other song. It isn't just the quieter bits, it's the overwrought nature of the album in general. The band overplays, Rob oversings (melodic or otherwise), and the songs are overwritten. It's a testament to just how much Machine doesn't actually suck that they can pull their cheesy music off, but the band is clearly full of themselves.

This is easily my favorite thrash song that is not by Artillery or Metallica.

Some people say it's repetitive and too simplistic. Those same people probably say the same thing about "The Thing That Should Not Be" or Dopesmoker, and who cares what they say.
