I think their last two albums were some of their best, Blood Fire Death is my favorite by far. Though I think twilight has some of the best instrumentals.
The Nordland albums were amazing, as was Hammerheart. I've never been able to get into their two thrash albums though (unless you wanna include Blood Fire Death, which was definitely thrashy). Overall however, Bathory's discography might just be my favorite in all of metal.

I've often ignored this album due to the existence of When the Kite String Pops, but damn is it good. Not as abrasive for the most part, but the riffs are still fantastic, the music is still badass yet eclectic, and Dax Riggs is still one of the best vocalists in metal/music. In a world where the commercial bar for acceptance of heavy music was even a little bit higher, Acid Bath could have been the biggest band on the planet.

Did a search for female leads in metal, and every thread wants me to make a judgement call on "best." Best this, best that. How about I just listen to something that isn't something I've heard a million times, even if it's an iteration of things that have come before it. And, since I'm listening to this right now, it counts for this thread.

SoundAct - "All That Remains"

Swedish band. The low growl of the vocalist is nice when it comes up. Other than that, standard metal"ish" fare. Melodic metal.

Here's some female vocals that you wouldn't know were female if you weren't told. The other two songs on the EP don't have clean vocals so far as I can remember, but I'm just posting this song to show that yes, it is a chick doing vocal duties. All of them. Some of my all-time favorite extreme metal vocals of any gender.

Some modern prog-metal goodness for the Batmeister.

Again with this. This album is just so crushingly heavy it blows my mind. Ultimate death/doom album of all time. And I have no idea how a human being can make the kinds of sounds that come out of Runhild Gammelsæter's mouth. The last minute is just her roaring over drums, and it's very impressive that she can maintain the intensity of the rest of the song almost by herself. Bitch is legit.

It's weird with me, as I've always felt that female vocals didn't work within a metallic-based structure as well; they've always come across as cheesy or less legit for whatever reason. That's a conclusion without a preset bias. In contrast, I listen to female vocals more often than not, and prefer them more often than not, in electronic music. Don't get me wrong, I do like some Evanescence, and Flyleaf is a personal favorite among female-led rock/metal acts. Not worried about the religious angle. I don't necessarily need to have clean vocals, per say, but I do need them to be mostly audible. Say, something like 75% clean and 25% screaming/growling, etc.

And now to check up on the aforementioned, since it's been a few.

Flyleaf - "Beautiful Bride"
