Don`t know enough about Angra but I know the Blind Guardian discography and I`d say A Night at the Opera was their best, but they`re a band where a lot of people seem to like different albums.

Imaginations from the Other Side is pretty much the greatest power metal album ever made, also immediately check out Nightfall In Middle Earth and Somewhere Far Beyond for great Blind Guardian. I'm not as up on Angra, but Angels Cry and Rebirth are pretty ****in' epic!

Make sure you avoid Dragonforce at all costs

I would never try to trick anyone into listening to Dragonforce. How they got a record deal, I do not know. How they are now somehow the most well known power metal band on the planet baffles me.

Refreshingly.... different. None of that running fingers randomly up and down the fretboard that characterises Dragonforce, and impresses their fans to no end. The are one of those bands I have an unhealthy obsession with loathing. I own their entire bleeding discography, from "Valley of the Damned" to "Ultra Beatdown" and hate every second of it. They haven't had a single new idea from day one.

That's because they stole it all from Stratovarius, but forgot to learn how to write a song. I like that you own all their albums even though you hate them. Masochist much? :rofl:

The intro to that was very good! I liked the guitar work too. I've really got to catch up with metal soon. And no, I'm not really a masochist, but can't stop myself from listening to everything by artists that I loathe. I've got Coldplay's entire discography too, including crap little B-sides collections such as "Prospect's March", which I would really recommend avoiding. I don't know who I hate more. One's incredibly stupid, the other's incredibly lame. In fact, they are both incredibly stupid and incredibly lame.

Holy **** on a cracker! I've been sleeping on this band for years cuase I figured they just sounded like Rhapsody with a name like Symphony X, but these guys are almost like progressive thrash, but with that power metal melodicism. Ace.

I think Symphony X can be described as nu-metal, but I can definitely hear power metal elements here:

Yes, I think being ginger may explain this weird behaviour. I lie awake at night, clenching my fists as I hear the words: "I dive in at the deep end / you become my best friend" sung in vein popping falsetto (Coldplay, X & Y). But for some reason, I can't stop. My hatred is so intense I will delay the urge to just put on "Livin' On a Prayer" and relax until about 1 am.

Nu metal?! I don't get that in the least. I get thrash, power, and progressive metal. But no nu metal.

Symphony X was good for a change, but it got a little samey after a while. Now this is what I'm talking about.

Go for it, I`ve actually got a lot a big interest in power metal at the moment and fancy listening to a whole load of bands that I haven`t heard in a while along with some new stuff. Most of the power metal stuff I know and like is by (Euro bands) I like some Manowar stuff but North american power metal is quite distinct to the Euro bands:

Blind Guardian
Helloween
Gamma Ray
Stratovarius
Hammerfall
Dragonforce (Don`t like)

All the above bands have released some great albums, despite the often heavy Iron Maiden influences and cheesy aspects associated with the genre.

Would be interesting to know your top 10 albums in the genre, so I can check if I know them.

Manowar actually also sounds quite alright to me, once I got past their image

It's been about five years since I was into power metal TBH, so I've forgotten a lot of ****. In the last few days I've sorta been having a PM renaissance, though, so now I'm rediscovering a lot of it. But yeah, besides Dragonforce, all those bands pretty much pwn.

The lead singer was a guy I knew about 20 years ago struggling on the Sunset Strip, trying to make it in a band. I just stumbled on this today and he looks and sounds exactly the same! Persistence pays off...I guess :)

One more from California. This was supposed to be their cross-over album, but ended up being the start of their decline. Still has some pretty choice tracks.

Definitely the music. Like Motorhead but more fun. I seem to remember some of the girls in that band were sorta...um, no thank you.
