I remember that, but I also remember getting burned out about halfway through. No such problem now. Even "And Yet It Moves" kicks ass all the way through. I'm starting to move through prog metal atm, and loving some Symphony X, Watchtower, and Psychotic Waltz.

Opeth still suck, though.

Any recs for some really heavy prog metal that isn't/crosses over into extreme metal? I'm finding that at least some prog metal avoids the cloying melodicism of stereotypical power metal (not that I don't love power metal to death, though), while being more unique and interesting than more traditional aggressive metal. I would love to be able to bang my ****ing head to some prog metal without having to say, "Yeah, it's heavy... for prog metal." Even the occasional Dream Theater song satisfies this criteria (think Train of Thought).

Preferably with relatively clean vocals, though, but use your best judgement. I listen to death metal and grindcore after all.

Based on what you say your looking at, here's a few vids to get you started from a few different artists/bands.

Define metal.
I usually go by the style of riffs, drumming, vocals, or complete lack of concern for recording quality as tell tale metal indicators. The sound of the riffs are the easiest to notice, so I mostly go by that.

Speaking of the sound of riffs, this song has one of my favorites.

So ****ing good and badass. If I can find more prog metal of this caliber I might have to start reevaluating my opinion of the genre.

The hell? I left behind deathcore years ago, and have failed to find anything to bring back my interest ever since. And yet here I find myself loving the hell out of Despised ****ing Icon just as much as I did when I was twenty. The hell?

Never Say Die from the Ritz in NYC, 1982 - this would later become a part of Ozzy's Speak Of The Devil album after a little studio magic:

So. Much. Fun. It's a bit early, but Despised Icon might just be in the running for one of my top ten death metal bands ever. Maybe.

Been a while looking for new stuff... I found this band on youtube clicking through random videos. The music is amazing, the vocals are hilarious... not the worst DM vocals ever, but mixed in a way that sounds like its out of place.

The vocals kind of turned me off at first, but every time I listen to these guys they kick my ass a little harder. Right now they are making mincemeat of my ****ing ears. 90s metalcore FTW!
