Yup, I'm now totally repping Fates Warning from No Exit onward. This is almost prog thrash, but better than pretty much any actual prog thrash band (except maybe Anacrusis). Dat ****ing riff!

Good stuff. Fates Warning have a refreshingly consistent discography....kinda like Testament. Or Queensrÿche up to 1994 (and then 2013-2015).

Just bought some CD-Rs for the express purpose of forcing a friend to listen to them on the way to and from the disc golf course, and Darkness in a Different Light is getting burned. Considering that I only have 10 burnable CDs atm, that's some ****. I love that it's almost as heavy as No Exit, but totally consistent and engaging from front to back. Saying that about a prog album almost makes me feel dirty.

If you don't want to call Hawkwind prog (though I don't see why you wouldn't) then Fates Warning are easily my fav prog band atm. Not that that's a hotly contested position, but still, FW rule.

Serous question. What defines metal? I'm listening to Awaken by Yes, and minus the fuzz pedals and aggressive vocals, it's pretty metal in intensity.

Define metal.

Metal is as metal does. Metal is not yes or rush. That's the short answer.

Homo sapiens are the only known species to attempt doing so.

Dude, stop asking that question. If you consider "Awaken" a metal song/album, then it's metal. If someone disagrees then does it really change how you listen to what you consider to be metal? I haven't heard the song/album, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I probably wouldn't consider anything by Yes to be metal, but that's neither here nor there as far as you're concerned.

I consider many Hawkwind tracks to be metal, but the general consensus is that Hawkwind is not metal, but "Magnu" is still a metal song as far as I'm concerned.

At its core, metal is just rock music at its loudest and most heavy/aggressive/whatever. That is not something that can necessarily be quantified, so quit worrying about it. Slayer is obviously metal, as I can't think anybody on Earth would debate the issue, but when considering 70s rock the dividing line can be arbitrary. Just accept that your criteria might be different than the majority of metal fans and move on.

Hawkwind are definitely prog...they're just influential on a whole lot of other genres too, which just goes to show how important they are.

I think I was the one who sold you on Darkness in a Different Light two years ago in my best of 2013 list....if you like the dynamics of that album you should check out Queensryche's Condition Human that came out this year. It's right in that same vein of quality.
