I thought you had a thread I posted in about their new album and told you to give it a listen? Maybe not.

But I agree. I bought the album actually off of iTunes, hadn't heard anything off of it, bought it release day however and listened to it all through one night at work, favored pretty much the entire album, no weak points, just songs that varied on quality but were fairly consistent in regard to being good.

Fan of Lamb of God at all? Their new album is one I'd call pretty great.

I think they were just trying to channel Metallica, but what came out was too watered down and dull.

That doesn't make sense. How can it be the best album since the album it directly followed? That's like saying Master of Puppets was Metallica's best album since Ride the Lightning.

I'll probably give it a shot one of these days, since every now and again I do have a mini-binge with Trivium (as in a few hours before I move onto something else).

If you dig Paradise Lost, I'd give My Dying Bride a shot. They were part of a sort of "Big Three" of British gothic doom (along with Anathema). I've never been a big fan of Paradise Lost, but My Dying Bride are pretty excellent, though gothic doom isn't really my fave doom sub-genre.




Early Katatonia is also pretty similar, and better to boot.




And both of these bands lost pretty much all of their death metal influences with later albums, if that means anything to you.

The did channel Metallica, which was a mistake. I tell my older brother all of the time how I think Trivium has been cranking out better music than Metallica has released the past, eight years maybe? I might be stretching how good Trivium is with that, but that's what I think.

And when I said In Waves was their best since Shogun, is that it was another album that was fairly consistent and more or less on par with Shogun.

No dude, skip Vengeance Falls. You won't find much on there that will hold your attention.

Katatonia? I started listening to them just a little before they released The Great Cold Distance (stellar album.) I for one think Katatonia got better as they go on. They may not be Death Metal anymore, but they're still great.

I haven't heard much from My Dying Bride. I'll check them out.

I'd rather listen to plenty of Trivium than I would anything Metallica has released since AJFA. Shogun is certainly a better album than anything from The Black Album on.

I'm just not a fan of their alt metal/doom rock/whatever sound. I don't dig gothic doom all that much anyway, so when they throw out the metal I'm just left with the aspect of their sound I didn't really like in the first place.

Well my brother is a die hard Metallica fan who sees no wrong in anything the band has ever put out, he loves it all. I remember when Shogun came out, I went to my brothers place and put it in his home stereo system. He asked me what I put in, and I said something to the effect of "oh, just the new Trivium record. Metallica can't seem to get anything decent out so somebody has to carry the torch." He loathed what he heard of course, liked absolutely none of Shogun. But my brother is the type of person that literally thinks he only listens to good music and none of it is bad. He'd preach till he was blue in the face to someone like you why he'll always be superior to you. It's a hoot.

I get what you mean with Katatonia. But it wasn't a matter of shifting their sound in order to sell more records that brought on that dramatic, drastic change either. Jonas had something happen with his vocal chords and was told that he absolutely cannot do the screaming/growls anymore if he wants to keep his career, or something like that. So the band adapted a sound that suited Jonas clean vocals, which is a melodic doom type sound, similar to Opeth in some ways. I like that sort of stuff though so The Great Cold Distances appeals to me, as do the two or three albums before it.

That's possible. I definitely heard someone mention the name before. Funny thing is, over the last few days I've been researching for the "Freshly Forged" section, new albums released, and had decided to take two from each month. I got to June and wanted the new Virgin Steele but couldn't find it anywhere, so just picked this one. I'll probably find out it's better than the VS in the end!

If you haven't listened to Green Jellÿ (pronounced Green Jello) you need to. They're damn good. And their artwork is damn good too. And the songs, damn good. Damn good band.

The more metalcore I listen to, the less time I have for BTBAM's mathcore moments, but their weirdo prog metal is still tops.

Not a fan of voivod. Their pedestrian guitar tone is boring.



Doesn't matter what era of the band it is, it's the same boring tone. I enjoy the raw aggression of their first two albums, but I'd much rather listen to NME. Their album sleeves rule though.

What about their metalcore moments do you not have time for?
