Oh damn I think Focus by Cynic is starting to hit for me. Heard plenty metal albums where they weld some other softer genre onto metal and it can be fun but the issue is usually that it still feels arbitrary to weld the two together but Focus feels like it has a certain verisimilitude between the death metal and jazz fusion that makes it much more compelling. It's too early to tell but I think this album might be ****ing cool as hell.
|
Alright I'm retracting my hot take on Mercenary being the best Bolt Thrower album cause Those Once Loyal really is just perfect and addictive. Every single song ****ing slaps and I want to do nothing but put every single song on repeat. And a Bolt Thrower album about WW1 is just what a Bolt Thrower album should be about.
|
ALL BOLT THROWER ALBUMS ARE GOOD BOYS! (even if the new singer is kinda meh)
|
A Bolt Thrower craze at the same time I was listening to Dan Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon podcast on WW1 made for a perfect storm to become obsessed with Those Once Loyal, which is all about WW1, the perfect Bolt Thrower war.

At this exact moment, the song "Greatest Hits" by Sublime is playing in Winamp on my computer. My current playlist is way too large to post here 1,282 songs. Ive actually got 2,359 MP3s on my machine, but only about half of them are worth listening to on an ongoing basis.
|
Bolt Thrower is most of what I listen to these days. I think they're my favorite metal band now and not too far off from the Ramones maybe as my favorite band in general. They both hit similar buttons in my brain with high energy iterations on one simple, infectious, core sound that makes me just as happy putting the same album on repeat or marathoning multiple albums. They're just Batlord crack.

100%. Bolt Thrower are one of my favorite metal bands too and you described them well. |

Snapcase's Progression Through Unlearning might just be a 10/10 album. Just a totally fire combo of metallic hardcore, post-hardcore, and actually good 90s alt metal. Every song is a banger and that drumming is wild.
|
Agreed, Snapcase is legendary. The best part about the drums on that album is that pingy snare sound, so dope and iconic.
|
You can't just keep having all these correct takes or I'll be forced to conclude you're not the best new member ever but a Russian bot.
|
I'm so honored, thank you for the *beep* compliment! I also think *boop* Deadguy are pretty dope. Do you *beep* like Coalesce?
|
Deadguy rule but I barely ever listened to Coalesce and I don't know if that's cause I didn't like them or they just fell through the cracks. You ever check out Arkangel or any of the H8000 scene from Belgium? That whole thing is a mini obsession of mine.
|
Yeah, I actually got into Arkangel from reading your old posts on this forum, so thank you. I think you posted about how they were like metalcore with Slayer riffs and I was instantly sold.
I'm not actually sure if I know any other bands from that scene, any you could recommend? |
Yeah just a bunch of meat and potatoes Slayercore that is just very satisfying. I think all those ****ty thrash revival bands bands should have been sat down and forced to listen to this **** to show them how to bring thrash into the modern day without being lame cartoon bands.
And I'll also throw in Maroon's first album cause it's very similar even if they were from Germany. |
Thank you for the recommendations! I assume you're talking about bands like Municipal Waste with the "lame cartoon bands", haha. I do definitely prefer this kind of thing to bands like that who just cosplay 80s thrash.
|
Power metal has a stereotype sound and you can modify that sound with "American" or "80s" to differentiate what power metal you're talking about but mostly to show that you aren't talking about floofy wheedly wheedly "gay" Eurotrash power metal largely from the 90s. Now if you're willing to delve into this cursed form of power metal there is a band who fully embodies all of these stereotypes and embraces full big gay and is completely unobjectionable: mother****ing Stratovarius. Stratovarius are ****ing amazing. They achieve this using everything from actual good songwriting, bitchin' riffs, and most importantly double bass drumming as up front as the guitar work.

whats yall think of the new QOTSA album its kinda mid IMO ....

Bolt Thrower SUCKS !!! there not the best " death metal" band

After some time I've finally figured out my love of Stratovarius but lukewarm feelings toward much of Blind Guardian. You've either got to be grimy 80s power metal or only the fruitiest of Eurotrash power metal. Nothing in between and Blind Guardian just ain't gay enough.
This is basically a power metal showtune and it's a perfect song. |

Me 10 minutes ago: This is the best metal song ever written.
Me Now. *If you're not into the first song's singer you just have to understand he's not singing with the band, he's ranting like a mad prophet declaring doom above the music itself |

Absolutely love it! I'm planning to browse the distrokid store soon to see if I can find a new album. I know albums might seem a bit old-fashioned these days, with most people storing their music in the cloud and all, but there's just something special about owning a physical copy, you know? Can't wait to add some new tunes to my collection!
