Duh. Of course it's cheesy. That's half the point. Pointing out that power metal is cheesy misses the point. Power metal embraces the cheese.

"Embrace the cheese!!!"
That's hilarious!

On a related note, I was wondering if you guys would be interested in hearing one of my local bands, Hecate Enthroned. They could be classified as symphonic, power metal, black metal, let's be honest: they are playing to loud to be offended by anything you call them!

Hecate Enthroned - The spell of the winter forest - YouTube

Enjoy.

Destroyer 666, although known for their black thrash, occasionally get into these modes wherein it's pure riff worship; the vocals are pushed to the back, the drums serve to emphasize the riffing, there are proper guitar harmonies, and - blasphemy of blasphemys - the soloing is actually somewhat melodic!

If the first 30 seconds doesn't grab you, nothing else in the song will. However, I must state I feel that riff is not only extremely well crafted, but somehow idiosyncratic - influenced by Burzum & Slayer without being a cheap amalgamation of both.

I really quite enjoyed the tremolo passages in that track. I think generally speaking, straight up black metal is at its best when a band can really put together solid harmonies and melodies whilst still sounding dissonant. I'd be interested in hearing something similar to this if you'd be willing to pass on some recommendations...

Ahhh, D666, wicked good HHBH. All their albums are highly recommended, I'd start with "Unchain the Wolves" which is an excellent black metal romp, then they get progressively thrashier from there. I'm currently listening to this little groover....

I am uncomfortable with these videos in my browsing history. "Hecate Enthroned" sounds a bit scary, but "Destroyer 666", saying things like "BLEEEEUGH THE BEAST SHALL RISE AAAARGH"... Ulp.
I'd also feel a bit weird playing them loudly in the car with the windows down.

Along with Hammerfall, Blind Guardian are pretty much the height of PM and quite possibly melodic metal in general.
