The Thrash Metal thread

a companion peice to my Death Metal thread. Same thing as that one, only for the discussion of thrash (and it's related styles and inspired styles)

The Albums Wars with Sadus vs. Morbid Saint vs. Devestation made me wanna go for this one. So many gems in the style that may not get the attention it deserves.

So let's start with a band I enjoy.

Epidemic's "Decameron" album is one of the best I have listened to. A must hear for people into thrash who have not heard it.

So who are some favorites of people here.... post something. Let's get this started and maybe help some people discover some gems..

BastardofYoung 09-06-2011 12:46 PM

Probably amongst my all-time favorites:

Darkness Descends by Dark Angel : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music

Such a great release. Featuring the drumming of the always great Gene Hoglan.

The Batlord 09-06-2011 12:46 PM

I've been listening to thrash for about ten years now. It's what got me into metal and music in general. Still love it to this day.

Post something? How about Jag Panzer? They're pretty overlooked, but their first album is pretty amazing power/thrash metal.

BastardofYoung 09-06-2011 12:54 PM

Yeah, Thrash Metal was my first venture into the world of metal.

The song that started it all for me:

Stumbled upon the album at the local music store in the cut out bin. They had it for $2 and I thought the cover looked amazing, so I picked it up, took it home and popped it in my walkman cause I thought my parents would freak out if they heard something like that coming out of my stereo. The drums in that song and first 90 seconds made my mouth drop... was amazing to me... the heaviest thing I had heard at the time. I listened to it over and over, and when I got my allowance I would buy Slayer tapes (cause I got enough to only get cassettes, not CD's... at the time tapes were about $9.99 and CD's $12.99, I got $12 allowance) and listen to them on my walkman (even in detention and in school suspensions).

So Thrash has it's place for me as my first venture into the world of Metal music.

Buzzov*en 09-06-2011 01:10 PM

Been listening to thrash for about 12 years.
here are a few of my favorite bands

BastardofYoung 09-06-2011 01:14 PM

Exhorder is the only one there that I am not very familiar with. I think most know them cause of the Pantera comparison, and how many cried that Pantera was a clone of Exhorder when they changed their style for "Cowboys from Hell". I have their albums on my computer here, should get around to listening to them.

Morbid Saint is amazing. Love that record and the other one as well.

Sacred Reich, I do not know.. need to give em a few more listens.. but they have not really gripped me from what I have heard. Will listen to them again soon. Sometimes it is just a matter of being in the right frame of mind.

Whiplash is another one I should revisit. Heard a few tracks by them and enjoyed them.

Buzzov*en 09-06-2011 01:18 PM

here is another good one.

BastardofYoung 09-06-2011 01:24 PM

first 53 seconds is the "7:00 From Tashkent" intro..

Good idea to have a pure thrash thread on here and hopefully it won`t get hijacked with people just talking about the big four etc.

As for Exhorder, well one of their two albums was thrash and the other was groove. Decent albums but nothing brilliant.........but then again maybe I should listen to both again as well.

BastardofYoung 09-06-2011 01:41 PM

Ahhh, I anticipated the big 4 talk when i started it, inescapable really... Fine with me if people wanna discuss them, but the point is to try to expose them to some other bands besides them. Hopefully it works to get people into the style more.

Wait to see how long it takes, haha.... Looking at my Death Metal thread, I do not think there has even been a single mention of Cannibal Corpse...

Maybe the mods could ban anybody who dares to mention Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer or Anthrax on this thread:beer:

BastardofYoung 09-06-2011 02:04 PM

Well, better ban me for posting a Slayer video then hahaha.

Sad if I get banned from my own thread.

I have nothing against the discussion of those bands, so long as they are talked about in relation to the scene as a whole. When talking about Thrash it is impossible to not mention them when talking about impact and inspiration on virtually every band since.

supermarlin 09-06-2011 06:07 PM

Thrash Revival bands Municipal Waste, Gama Bomb and SSS are great.

jackhammer 09-06-2011 07:12 PM

A very nice companion piece ;)

Surf Nicaragua is pretty excellent, cept for the War Pigs cover

me, I like Voivod, Forced Entry and the abovenamed SR

BastardofYoung 09-06-2011 09:22 PM

So you like more of the technical thrash metal?

You should listen to some Watchtower. They were the start of all that.

Howard the Duck 09-06-2011 09:23 PM

^^nope, never heard of them

will check that out later - youtube's been blocked at work

Mondo Bungle 09-06-2011 11:09 PM

Thrash is good. I'm not one to go into extreme detail and name millions of bands though.
Who remembers Sacred Reich? Underrated, in that they are often overlooked, and their albums have lame reviews they don't deserve.
Flotsam & Jetsam and Toxik are nice.

Srsly, I know too much.

Mondo Bungle 09-06-2011 11:13 PM

I didn't notice SR were already mentioned.

If you're into tech thrash, check out Toxik, Artillery, Dark Angel, Watch Tower, VEKTOR!, Heathen, and the like. I just had a bunch more in mind but totally blanked.

early SR is awesome

later stuff are just too poppish

The Batlord 09-07-2011 08:36 AM

I'm currently digging a band called Laaz Rockit. Awesome band, terrible name.

I noticed that they were mentioned, but I had to post a vid about Heathen. Victims of Deception is just a beast thrash album.

@Bastardof Young

I've listened to like 30s of Watchtower. I can't do the vocals. I just can't. Like nails on a chalkboard.

I never liked Watchtower at all despite their debut Energetic Dissasembly being a good album, both Anacrusis and Voivod were both far superior prog thrash bands imo.

This. Nothingface and Screams and Whispers are two of the most amazing albums I've heard in a long time.

well, they're musically meritorious

but what's with the vocals? does he have British Punk Singer disease?

That`s a definite turn off:laughing: Unless of course they sound like Paul Di`Anno

Howard the Duck 09-07-2011 09:15 AM

British Punk Singer as in mumbled inarticulate singing

Paul DiAnno, despite sounding punk, can enunciate clearly

The Batlord 09-07-2011 09:28 AM

Another band I'm just getting into that just blew me away is Massacra. I love that thrash can still excite me after all this time.

@BastardofYoung

I'm listening to Epidemic, and they're pretty awesome.

Meh I think Warbringer is the best out of them. Followed by Havok.

oh and personally I think Sepultura up until Roots **** all over the big 4.

german thrash

some favorites
(overkill is underrated IMO. Know the original drummer. cool dude)

BastardofYoung 09-07-2011 11:44 AM

Yeah, Watchtower's vocals are something you either love or hate... I do not mind them in small doses. But can't deny their influence on later Voivod for example.

@Batlord. Yeah, "Decameron" is one of the best thrash albums I have heard.

Massacra is a great band as well, I always thought they were closer to Death Metal myself. But "Final Holocaust" and "Enjoy the Violence" are great albums.

Mondo Bungle 09-07-2011 03:32 PM

Overkill is my favorite thrash band.

Vektor has to be the best modern thrash band. Even if they're not your favorite. So many bands recycle older riffs and stuff, and never innovate. Vektor slays. Havok's another good one.

I don't really care about the distinction between thrash and early death metal. After a time they obviously became separate, but is it really important whether Scream Bloody Gore was thrash or death metal? Massacra works as a death metal or thrash metal band for me.

BastardofYoung 09-08-2011 01:20 PM

Yeah, but "Enjoy the Violence" was released in 1991, by that time Death Metal had an indentity. But I think Massacra can be placed in both.. Death/Thrash is a style to itself, but I think each band who plays it has leanings more towards one or the other, Massacra leans more towards the Death Metal side to me. That is what I was saying.

BastardofYoung 09-08-2011 01:55 PM

Everybody should listen to this album if they have not already:

Sacrifice are a great thrash band from Canada. Not even listed on the wikipedia page for Canadian Thrash Metal.. sadly. Should be right at the top.

Hey! Anthrax were awesome. Spreading the Disease, Among the Living, and Persistence of Time were amazing.

Howard the Duck 09-09-2011 10:40 AM

i can't stand Belladonna's voice

I like Sound of White Noise with that ex-Armored Saint guy

edit - I find Suicidal Tendencies to be quite meh as well, though I used to like them

Didn't really like either of those songs at all, so I'm going to have to disagree with you on how good it is.
