The Allman brothers hardly count as southern rock. They can't be defined by a single genre. They're jazz/blues/southern rock. Way more complex than any other southern rock band

Actually, I`d say that the Allman Brothers are the definitive Southern rock band. Using the criteria of the opening post;
> they`re from the southern United States
> they play rock and blues
> they focus on guitar and vocals
> two of their albums are rated in the Top 5 Southern Rock Releases

Sounds like Southern Rock to me !

Maybe if you'd dig a little deeper into their music you would understand what i'm saying. No other southern rock band writes a song dedicated to miles davis. They focus on guitar vocals? That band focuses on a lot more than that. Percussion is a huge part of that band. When theyre improvising and turning a song into a 30 minute jam, and there are no vocals for 20 minutes, i'd say theyre focusing on a lot more than vocals and guitar. No other southern rock band incorporates jazz and even eastern indian music(in the derek trucks era) like the allman brothers. They may be the "definitive" southern rock band like you say, but there has not been a southern rock band that is anything like the allman brothers.

^ Yes, I`m sorry I was so picky about your first post, blastingas10.
You are clearly a fan too, and I agree, the Allman Brothers are southern rock plus something that no-one else in the genre delivers.
I love those classic long tracks on Eat A Peach and Fillmore East and have spent years trying to find something as good. Don`t know the later Allman albums so well, though I really like some Gov`t Mule material.
I can also recommend DT`s Soul Serenade. Have you heard it ? There`s only one track that has any vocals, and there`s one track that, yes, is definitely jazz !
