Can't really find a reason to go against the grain here. The self-titled is simply a better album.

Black Sabbath - 7
Sabotage - 0

The blueprint for all things doom, I will not deviate from the public's opinion. Nothing against Sabotage (Hole in the Sky & Symptom of the Universe are great tracks as are the others) but the S/T I enjoy much more.

S/T - 8
Sabotage - 0

looks like a massacre again

perhaps US should have paired off the less favoured albums with each other first, or the most favoured ones with each other

Yer the two cover tracks do let it down a bit and I have to be in the mood for the Aynsley Dunbar cover.

I did just that and saw both of these albums as the weaker two of the six that I'd chosen!

Anway this battle is over and the debut will go through to face the next match up very shortly.

The debut album thrashes Sabotage 8>>>>>>0

The debut now goes up against their second album, without doubt one of the most influential metal albums ever released and often regarded as the very cream of the whole Sabbath discograhy, a fact I more or less agree with.

Black Sabbath Black Sabbath 1970

Vs

Black Sabbath Paranoid 1970

Hard choice, but I gotta go with the debut. Paranoid is heavier than concrete shoes, but the debut's combo of rock, metal, and blues just creates one of the greatest atmosphere's on a metal album. Gives me chills. The way the first song builds up tension with three chords played at an absolute snail's pace is just genius.

S/T - 1
Paranoid - 0

self-titled - 2
Paranoid - 0

While I do love Paranoid, I agree with Batlord. Though "Paranoid" has some great moments ("War Pigs", "Hand of Doom", "Electric Funeral") it does have a few kinda fillerish moments ("Rat Salad" and yeah, even though it is so loved the title track, maybe even "Planet Caravan")

I find the pacing, tone and feel of the debut to feel better and prefer it to Paranoid.

I think Paranoid is a far more consistent album than the debut, the songs flow better and the band more assured of their sound. Like Led Zep 2 this is one of the classic sophomore sets of the 1970's and its essential.

Black Sabbath 2
Paranoid 1

I love Paranoid. My favorite of the albums. Like Unknown Soldier it's more consistent in sound, and War Pigs alone could get my vote.

Black Sabbath- 2
Paranoid 2

Perhaps Paranoid is more consistent, but the first half of Black Sabbath is one of the greatest achievements in metal or rock. Just brilliant. Oh god, the first song, then the harmonica on "The Wizard", and the freak fest of "Wall of Sleep" that just screams for an acid trip? None better IMO. And how can I not mention the fuzzy evilness of "NIB"? Original version totally ****s on the rerecorded version.
