I'm gunna go with Altar of Plagues, too. The album is just more than Fen. Has more post rock, harder metal sections, just everything is turned up to 11.

Altar of Plagues- 2
Fen- 0

Never having heard of either band before and not being that up to date with recent black metal, I had nothing recent to compare either album to in order to gauge their strength, both albums had highpoints but also a number of lows (mostly being the overly long songs) I couldn`t decide which I thought was the more enjoyable of the two albums, so after listening to both yesterday, I decided today on which one I thought I`d be more likely to listen to again and the gut feeling was easily with Fen.

I think it's time we call this one, not many people seem to be interested.

Yes this battle has been up longer than most and I don`t think its going to get anymore votes so Altar of Plagues win 2-1. Ok here is a blackened sludge/doom metal match-up thanks to The Batlord. Again take a few lines explaining your choice. The Coffinworm cover is bigger than the norm on here, as I couldn`t get the right size on it.

Hey, Unknown Soldier, that's Unearthly TRANCE, not Unearthly Child.

Gonna have to go with Unearthly Trance.

I love how Coffinworm have this Hellhammer meets doom metal thing going on. They have a really great raw sound that brings to mind a time when metal took itself far less seriously and just wanted to make sick music.

But Unearthly Trance just have a more developed and better executed sound. They just have this great depressing doom metal sound that they get by mixing it with nihilistic Celtic Frost-esque black metal rather than just trying to sound like another My Dying Bride rip off. Everything about this record just screams nihilism and catharsis. I also love the guitar tone that's heavy on feedback.

Although on further listening to more Unearthly Trance, I probably would have suggested Electrocution rather than The Trident, it's still a massively satisfying album. Also, Coffinworm should get some extra credit due to the fact that When All Become None is there first album and The Trident is Unearthly Trance's third. I'm excited to see where Coffinworm go from here.

Unearthly Trance - 1
Coffinworm - 0

I'm not going to lie, I didn't care much for either album. The Coffinworm album was a bit more raw and I found myself checking my progression on the album less than I did with the Unearthly Trance album, but I will concede that the Unearthly Trance album was more substantial. As far as which one I'd pick... hell it's kind of hard to pick a winner on two albums I didn't care for so instead I flipped a coin, heads for Coffinworm and tails for Unearthly Trance and heads came up so...

Coffinworm - 1
Unearthly Trance -1

Really liked both albums but the Coffinworm stood out slightly more for me. The Unearthly Trance album seemed slightly more diverse (for lack of a better word) but I thought the vocals and the flow on the Coffinworm album, to have just the right amount of intensity to get me all hot and excited....... metal does that to me. I`ve also made a note of both bands, as both play the type of metal that I`m always into.

@Pete, its Coffinworm and not Coffinwood

Coffinworm- 2
Unearthly Trance- 1
