I really don't have a taste for folk/viking/pagan (whatever you want to call it) metal, however I felt like the Ensiferum record encompasses all that the genre should be. I also really enjoyed the production techniques and the seamless transitions from song to song.
I can respect the musicianship of Wintersun and the talent of Jari Mäenpää in particular, but without his original Ensiferum bandmates, his work just falls short for me. The Finntroll album was over the top in all the wrong ways. I found it really cumbersome to listen to. Ensiferum-2 Finntroll-0 Wintersun-1 |

I've tried really hard to get into Ensiferum, but the only album I can listen to by them is their 2007 one Victory Songs. So with them out of the running I'm going to have to go with Finntroll. I've always had an appreciation for their dedication to their theme, and Jaktens Tid is an incredibly catchy album for me. While I really do like that Wintersun album and am waiting patiently for Time to see the light of day, but Finntroll have a good three albums I like to come back to, one of which came out last year so they have a really niched out place in my heart.

Folk metal is not really my style and the only band I was familiar with was Ensiferum and that album. I love the Ensiferum covers and when in the right mood can actually enjoy their music. The Wintersun album I was looking forward to, but to be honest didn`t think much of it and it was a disappointment. The Fintroll album I found easily the most enjoyable though, maybe because it had more traditional extreme metal mostly black metal influences to it.

Ensiferum and Wintersun basically sounded like decent power metal with extreme(ish) vocals. I wouldn't nominate them for album of the year anytime soon (or ever) but I could get wasted to that. Finntroll actually have some class when it comes to songwriting.

It looks like no more votes are going to come in here so Finntroll surge to a 3-2-1 victory, probably no surprise really due to its heavier more noticeable extreme influences (most voters on here are into extreme metal) Next up two bands with their techy thrash, that are usually held in very high esteem in metal circles and they have been suggested by Mondo Bungle. Again take some time to explain your choice.

extremely tough choice, kinda like pitting Dimension Hattross with Mental Vortex, both of which I think are superior albums by both bands
well, Voivod is rougher but lacks chops, making it up with aggression, i really have to confess i didn't really "love" KT, but it's miles ahead of "Angel Rat" (which sound like Rush trying to play thrash badly) Coroner is a paragon of prog-thrash, though i have had discourses with people who prefers their earlier rougher material - i think otherwise, the polish just shows how accomplished they are so:- No More Color - 1 Killing Technology - 0 |

Thats why they got Rush producer Terry Brown in to produce it and make it sound like a Rush album, but it just didn`t work. The same could be said for the albums that Terry Brown produced for Fates Warning, he gave them more of smoother sound but lost the bite of the band, but saying all that, he was far better with Fates Warning than with Voivod.

Gotta go with Coroner. The riffs are kinda off the wall, but they still make your head bang and they just never stop coming. The vocals aren't the best, but they're not really the point and the vocals on the Voivod album aren't winning any awards either.
