I`ve always thought of Mastodon was one of the most overrated bands in metaldom, sure they`re great musicians especially the drummer and the album concepts are well thought out and Blood Mountain a good album but the group lack a focal point in a good singer and they also lack cohesiveness and thats always been the big let down. The Baroness album for me is everything that Mastodon aren`t, its more cohesive and the singing more impressive and its a metal essential for the 00s.

My vote goes to Mastodon. Remission is Mastodon at its edgiest, something that they kind of shied away from with their later recordings in exchange for a more progressive stance (nothing wrong with that btw). So in essence, it's like the heaviest Mastodon record against another consistently good release from Baroness. Can't go wrong with either but Mastodon barely pulls it out.

Baroness - 6 Daaaang. Liked the Mastodon record, but a few songs into The Red Album and I knew exactly who was going to win this battle. Baroness wins by a long shot. Every single song is just so memorable, so awesome, that it just isn't matched, even by Mastodon's pure ferocity. |
As far as both of these bands go...
Blood Mountain>Crack The Skye>Blue Record>Red Album>Leviathan>Remission The fact that I consider Remission to be the weakest only speaks volumes for the quality of these two bands' albums, that album is great. |

Leviathan > Red Album > Blue Album > Remission > Crack the Skye Not a big fan of proggy Mastodon. |
If it was between Remission and Blue Record I might have gone with Baroness. I found the Red Album to be a little boring and the vocals become monotonous to me, so I would go with Remission on this one. I'm not really sure why Remission was the Mastodon album chosen for the battle here but I would pick it for its intensity.
