Listening now. Starting with Abyssal. SO far I like this one, and I am only 2 minutes in.
Let you know what I think when I am done.

I am with Mondo on this one.
I liked the Abyssal album a lot. It has an interesting sound to it. Enough atmosphere to really hold my interest for the most part. It flowed very well, and had a sound that carried it to the end. I like the atmosphere it creates. Though I found some ideas ran really long, and at times it became a little more boring. But overall, it was a solid release that was satisfying. Listening to Dephosphorus, this just has a sound that is too my liking. In the vocal department, it does not come across as a Death Metal album at all. The voice has this almost harder Steve Albini quality to it. At times I was thinking it was like a noisier Big Black. Also calls to mind bands like Unsane, Today is the Day and more of the Amphetamine Reptile line up. It is pummeling and has a quality that is so cross genre, it is hard to pin to one style. Like hardcore, post-hardcore, noise rock and a touch of Death Metal (in regards to the drumming). The riffing is great, this is a style more to my tastes. The ideas do not run long, they are more shorter spastic bursts that keep me grooving. While I enjoyed Abyssal, I just find this album to be more to my liking. Dephosphorus - 2 Abyssal - 2

Alright. Been a week. I think we should leave it to Janszoon to get the tie breaker vote in. Then we can move onto the next one.

Well, been almost a week, and nothing. Held up last one, but time to get on track.
I will let someone break the tie if they want, but I will also put up the next battle and get things going here. mythsofmetal proposed this one, so we will get onto this. Absu - Tara vs. Melechesh - Emissaries as he said: "Both bands are Blackened Thrash Metal with mythological/occult lyrics, and these two albums are usually considered their best by many of their fans I've come across. In the pages I've looked over of the "Metal Wars" thread neither of the bands have been mentioned or featured, so I think these two would be a good choice. I'll hope to see them featured sometime in the coming weeks, thanks." So here is a new one, go...

As far as the current war goes...
Emissaries wins this easily for me. So many times when metal bands try to incorporate ethnic folk sounds into their music they end up making albums that are just typical metal punctuated by folk interludes. Melechesh are the rare example that actually succeeds at making a true musical hybrid. Even at their heaviest, all the tracks on this album have a distinctly middle eastern sound to them and I think they pull it off really well. The playing is tight, the compositions are dynamic, and I even like the vocals quite a bit—they sound like they'd come from the mouth(s) of that three headed lion dog on the cover. The Absu album is decent too, but I feel like the production really lets it down. It's so thin sounding. Very little low-end. And the drum sound is terribly flat, which is a pity since the drummer seems pretty good. Absu: 0 Melechesh: 1 |
