Old In Flames was good. I like ATG, but I would choose that album over them. Any other album by In Flames, naw, but "Whoracle" had some good moments. "Gyroscope" is an amazing song.

All the tr00 metal elitists I'm aware of have a huge love affair with Amon Amarth (no that there's anything wrong with that, awesome band) but aren't they considered melodeath? If anyone says the words "viking metal" I will destroy them. Lyrical themes do not dictate a sub genre.

I've noticed that too. Metal elitists don't seem to like gimmicks, but Amon Amarth has one of the most gimmicky images out their (but like you said, they are good). In the end, if you are an elitist, you are a follower. People develop elitist tastes so that they can call themselves "trve metal" or "cvlt" or what have you. Even if they liked melodeath, they wouldn't admit it. Something allowed Amon Amarth to slip through the melodeath filter for these elitists. It provided an outlet for them to satisfy the melodeath needs they keep buried deep inside

My guess would be the vocalist. He has a much more gutteral death metal voice, rather than the more melodic approach of Anders from In Flames. Not to mention he looks like a fucking viking. There is nothing more metal than looking like a viking.

Exactly the gimmick I was referring to.

But he doesn't dress in some goofy outfit. He just looks like a viking. He looks like a mountain, he has one of the most glorious beards ever, and he just looks like what I'd imagine a viking who was dropped in the twenty first century would look. It's not just some ridiculous affectation, he's just a ****ing viking!

Johann Hegg was frozen in a glacier, and then melted back into consciousness to start Amon Amarth and keep tr00 metal alive!

Seriously speaking, the guitar melodies in their songs are epic and they are one of the most consistent bands out there in terms of putting a constant catalogue of great albums.

Converge has my vote, aside from Dillinger Escape Plan, I'd say they are the definitive mathcore band. As Unknown mentioned, Jane Doe is brutal but I'd say You Fail Me is just as good if not better.

i'd go with Coalesce simply because it's more eclectic

Converge 2
Coalesce 1
