I think I'm going to have to go with Anorexia Nervosa on this one, on the sole fact that they actually played the style of music at the heart of this battle. I thought that Fleshgod Apocalypse album was pretty awesome... as a technical death metal album, but not as a symphonic metal album. Their use of symphonic elements were so sparse can I seriously hardly remember what songs featured them, besides the first and last tracks.

We have the situation of a draw here, which is made even more awkward by the fact that most of the voters in this particular battle have already voted, hopefully somebody can break the deadlock, or I may have to resort to either the toss of a coin or give it to Anorexia Nervosa as they are the champion and not the challenger.

Ok as there have been no more votes, I'm going to give it to Anorexia Nervosa as it was basically the task of Fleshgod Apocolypse to dethrone it and it couldn't do that. Next up are Septic Flesh a death metal from Greece of all places and before the album selected, they had put out several albums previous to this. As a footnote the album was produced by Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy a metal band I like a lot.

I was not expecting Septic Flesh to be so..... friendly. Their sound has a definite mainstream aspect; it goes down easily. I dunno if you want to call that influence nu-metal or groove metal or industrial metal or what have you, but it's there. The production is fantastic, as well - it's polished but not overly compressed. It sounds very natural, organic.
I think the highlight of this album, for me, was "Oceans of Grey"; but on this track, they also move quite beyond the typical metal sound. It's there, sure, but the atmospheric, orchestral elements are emphasized by that traditional metal sound - not vice versa. It reminds me sort of The Buggles debut. When I saw Septic Flesh was listed as one of the contestants I was kind of hoping it would be an older album so I'd have an excuse to finally get into their older material. In any case The Great Mass was one of my favorite albums from last year and is something I continue to listen to often enough in the car and at the gym so I'm going to have to give it to them for this round.

I think Septic Flesh takes this one easily. For me, it was the first album (in this war) to properly integrate the symphonic aspect into the rest of the music. The symphonic bits were also quality in of themselves, sounding naturally orchestral rather than sounding like they came from a midi keyboard.
