"elitist" prog-rockers

most of them can't stand stuff like Rush or neo-prog

Woops, I listened to Souls at Zero and completely forgot to vote here. Well, it wins by a country mile: dark, mysterious, and surprisingly fresh for how early it appeared on the sludge scene.

Neurosis easily win 4-0 Now the next battle up will be the pivotal one here and surely will yield the overall winner, despite the fact there is still one more battle to go.

James Says:Neurosis-I enjoy their later work a lot more but Neurosis are one of those bands nobody can agree on. A lot less abrasive than the other bands featured, they are said to have invented post-metal after all.
Acid Bath-Another quality underrated band, fantastic lyrics. A somewhat patchy album but when it hits it really hits and it has some fantastic tracks.

Neurosis Souls at Zero 1992

Acid Bath When the Kite Strings Pop 1994

This is the toughest battle yet, but I think Acid Bath's disturbing lyrics take the gloom and doom sludge cake by a thin margin.

Ooo. This is a tough one.

Acid Bath are very fun, but they're a band I feel embarrassed playing around others. The lyrics are so ****ing ridiculous, it almost kills it for me.... I really wish I could just push a button and have the vocals be indecipherable. The music is really, really solid, however.

Neurosis, I <3 Neurosis, but they're pretty much the exact opposite of what I tend to be into. I like short, catchy songs that can be plucked from the midst of an album and enjoy on their own. Neurosis require... an hour or more of my time. It's like running a ****ing marathon.

Acid Bath - 2
Neurosis - 0

I'm going to have to go with Acid Bath on this one as well, even though I prefer Paegan Terrorism Tactics (1996) over When The Kite String Pops (1994). I love Dax Riggs' sense of humour, it really reminds me of Peter Steele's in a way, both a little melodramatic but something I find enduring. As for Neurosis, I'm not a big fan of their material prior to Through the Silver in Blood (1996), so it wasn't a hard decision for me to make.

The Acid Bath debut is diverse and a great favourite of mine, they've kind of mixed up death metal, punk, straight-up metal and added in the vital sludge ingredient, it is one of the great metal debuts of the 1990s and really does have some complex playing as well. The Neurosis album again is diverse and atmospheric, and pummels the listener into sheer submission and that album cover ohhhhhh that album cover from the Wicker Man is just perfect. If Neurosis weren't losing 3-0 I might have gone with Acid Bath and I don't fancy tossing a coin so.

Acid Bath -3
Neurosis -1
