Maudlin of the Well was fantastic! Naked City was just a little too far on the jazz side, and I often forgot I was listening to an album for Metal Wars. Naked City felt a little too wacky for me as well, and I haven't decided if its true art or ostentatiousness. As for Maudlin of the Well, I think they had a real focus with that album, one that I'm glad I heard.

Maudlin of the Well win 6:4 and will go into the final showdown against Celtic Frost, without doubt one of the most revered bands in metaldom.
What Jack Says:Celtic Frost certainly went off on a tangent with Into The Pandemonium but some of the classical and chamber music used combined with Gothic female vocals was astonishing at the time. Maudlin of the Well Leaving Your Body Map 2001

Honestly, I don't have to listen to ItP again. I already know it's better. The Maudlin album was excellent, but Celtic Frost just made one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It was diverse, yet never sounded random. Made you bang your head, yet was always accessible.

Into The Pandemonium was not received too well upon release. Funny how times change. I loved it immediately.

There can only really be one winner here and that is Celtic Frost, this band are basically a metal institution and ITP was their most diverse album as they experimented with a large variety of styles and came out with a classic, Maudlin of the Well is a great album but as soon as Tom Fischer starts singing on "Mesmerized" you know there can only be one winner. The only downside of the album, is that I really don't know what they were doing kicking off the album with a Wall of Voodoo cover!
