SO, I haven't listened to the Naked City album yet, but I'm listening to Maudlin of the Well, and I just wanted to say something. I've been getting more into Opeth recently, but after listening to this band Opeth almost sound like underachievers. Maudlin of the Well just do so much without it ever sounding awkward. Brilliant.

got that maudlin of the well, but haven't heard it yet
heard it, feel it's a grower and i need a second ingest ok i made a decision one is mostly jazz with a few metal trax one is mostly shoegazer/post-rock with a few metal trax i would award a score each to one but what's the point of me voting, then? so if you point a gun to my head, and ask which one I enjoy more, it's Maudlin of the Well Maudlin of the Well - 1 Naked City - 1 |
Anyone liking Maudlin are well advised to listen to Kayo Dot a band that Maudlin mainman Toby Driver was in when Maudlin were on hiatus. Even more chilled but still has heavy elements.

After much consideration, I've decided that both are phenomenal albums. But maudin of the Well has less replay value. I could listen to Naked City for hours on end, but Maudlin's piece is more of a one shot deal with repeats in the future. Plus it's going to take way more than Leaving Your Body Map to make me vote against Zorn.

Maudlin of the Well Tough vote, I do really enjoy Maudlin of the Well's work. But Naked City will be hard to dethrone. |
Gonna go with Maudlin of the Well. Both fantastic though.

Naked City - 3
Maudlin of the Well - 3 Going with Maudlin on this one, for the same reason as last time... it's actually metal. It's also quite good, but more importantly, it is metal. And that's all I have to say about that. |
Maudlin has great atmosphere, and I love an album that is it's own little world that pulls you in, but Naked City is just such an anomaly for me that I just can't stop thinking about how just plain weird it is. Even when it's accessible it's still weird.
Naked City - 4 Maudlin of the Well - 3 |
Without a doubt I prefer Maudlin of the Well, I've listened to about 80% of the album and have to say love every song and this is the first album that actually contrives to really be multi-genre and with enough metal to be part of a metal playlist. Some of these songs feel very deep and resonate very well with me. Its an album I'll look to pick up on cd one day and feel glad that I've heard it.

Naked City is too off-the-wall for me. Maudlin of the Well takes the lead!
