I like their debut, but wouldn't consider it the best in the style, or even the best in its own scene. Finland had some great bands, like, Adramelech, Depravity, Funebre, Purtenance, Rippikoulu, Demilich, Excrement, and, Demigod... just to name a few.

Keeping the Finnish trend going…



As for Amorphis, I think Tales From the Thousand Lakes was their finest hour. And if you want to call that album 'melodic death metal' as some do, it's one of only a small handful of bands labelled this I actually like.

You definitely should, I’ve never heard another album anything like it. It has a majestic atmosphere that sucks you right in and is a splendid mixture of death metal, folky melodies (some of them sound like they almost wouldn’t be out of place on a Temnozor album) and even smatterings of doom.
