ok, next topic of discussion on Death Metal subgenres.
Slam Death Metal.... what do you think? User:Mezmerizer/Slam Death Metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Personally all the bands in the style I have heard have been not to good to me. But I do not think it is all that far removed from what would be called Deathcore now... though it shares traits with Brutal Death Metal as well. are considered the originators of the style.

Bastard, I`m actually working through that list you recommended me and I`m really digging Immolation especially the Dawn of Possession album, the riffing and singing on that is something else! You didn`t recommend Obituary to me and I already knew a couple of their albums, but have been listening to the Cause of Death album and hell.........that album is one of the best metal albums I`ve heard in some time and I can`t believe I`d never heard it before, its an absolute death metal classic and may even be the best death metal album I`ll listen to!
All the stuff I`m listening to, I`m using albums such as Death Leprosy which I still see as the best death metal album of the first phase and Death Symbolic and Morbid Angel Covenant as the perfect yardsticks of death metal and technical death metal to measure everybody else upto. |

Yeah. Immolation has been pretty consistent through out their entire career. Each album has been pretty great in it's own right. The last 3 have not been as good as the first 5, but are still enjoyable none the less.
Dawn of Possession is a great debut record. "Here in After", the follow up is also great.. get to that one ASAP as well. The one I mentioned "Close to a World Below" is still their masterpeice in many ways, and the follow up to that "Unholy Cult" is fantastic as well. Also, "Cause of Death" is a fantastic album, as is "The End Complete". I would have added that, but you said you knew the more popular ones I believe (or something to that effect) so I just assumed Obituary is a band you knew already. As I say, Florida has many of my favorite bands. If I were to give a recommendation to anybody some introudction albums from that scene would probably go something like.. 1. Deicide - Legion 2. Morbid Angel - Covenant 3. Obituary - Cause of Death 4. Death - Human 5. Brutality - Screams of Anguish 6. Monstrosity - Millennium 7. Massacre - From Beyond 8. Resurrection - Embalmed Existence 9. Diabolic - Supreme Evil 10. Disincarnate - Dreams of the Carrion Kind and of course: Cynic - Focus Atheist - Unquestionable Presence Nocturnus - The Key D.V.C. - Molecular Shadow

I knew Obituary and Slowly We Rot very well but Cause of Death is light years ahead of that in quality! Deicide are going to be on any list really due to their popularity. I`ve always thought Legion was a good album but not as great as the best put out by Death and Morbid Angel around the same time. Also, I was never a fan of Deicide`s debut and I remember reading that the Glenn Benton`s voice on that album, had been manipulated by Scott Burn`s production techniques to sound even more brutal, usually something unless its very well done, that just ends up sucking the soul out of the album.

That is why I go with Legion. I also have some level of attachment to it, It is the first Death Metal album to get me into the style, and first I bought as well when i got into the style. So it will always have my number 1 spot.. also I think it lives up to it. Only 28 minutes long, and seems to go by quicker than that. But in terms of musicianship and brutality, it is their best in my mind. Even though the self-titled has some better songs. "Lunatic of God's Creation" and "Dead By Dawn" are 2 of the best songs in the style. But "Legion" to me is the essential, because of nostalgia and because I think it lives up to it's hype still.
Also, you are right, vocals on the first album were manipulated in the studio, another reason I go with "Legion", no enhancements on that one, it is all Glen's vocals, and they sound amazing to me. His vocals in "Satan Spawn, the Caco-Daemon" are amazing, and are not enhanced. First 2 Deicide albums are essential to any Death Metal collection. "Once Upon the Cross" is good, but in a more cartoonish type of way when compare to the first 2. After that, it got kinda lame, though "Serpents of the Light" has a few good moments. I do not think they would recapture their status as a premier DM band until "The Stench of Redemption", which is their best since "Legion" IMO. Their new album from what I have heard is also pretty good.

a recommendation for people to check out.
This EP is great, progressive influenced Death Metal with hints of Doom. One of the more unique bands I have heard, also in their use of violins as well. Creating something that I have rarely heard. great atmosphere and a unique sound. Avant-Garde stuff at times as well. Preach Eternal Gospels by Phlebotomized : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives - Phlebotomized also their first full length Immense Intense Suspense by Phlebotomized : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music First things first, go ahead and laugh at what is probably the stupidest cover you have seen for a Death Metal album... it is ok... we have all been there. Get that out of your system.. But then, listen to the album.. because the music is not as stupid as the cover, I promise you that. Once again, the use of violins is cool. Very progressive and unique stuff as well. Highly recommended Death Metal.

and one more band for all to check out:
Going for stupid album covers to stupid bandnames... but once again, do not let the stupid name fool you into thinking the music is stupid... because it is amazing. R.U. Dead? was a Death Metal band out of Germany. Their "Promotape" was amazing, and one of the most underrated gems (or underrheard maybe). Great band, who deserves more fans. Stupid name aside, they made some great music. Find the compilation I posted the cover above for. Completely Dead by R.U. Dead? : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music Amazing band. Get the "...Simply Dead" EP as well... infact, their entire output is worth hearing.
