Besides, the last few years, I've been convinced the most interesting extreme releases were the inchoate ones when the genres were still forming and the metal bands were still taking cues from the best of hardcore & crossover.

1988 probably would have worked for me.

A useful exercise and a really great list for somebody wanting to listen to rootsy extreme metal.
