anyone heard Christian Rock?
Is it a genre on its own?
Ive noticed no one here speaks of music that represents the word, I find the word catchy sometimes, I was listening to some Christian Heavy Metal and wow, kinda cool. Anyone else listen to Christian Rock? |

I don't find contemporary Christian to be much different from whatever genre it's affixed to besides the lyrical aspect of it. I can dig positivity and everything but I'm not a mainstream Christian and I usually disagree with their interpretation of the scriptures anyway, so I don't really care/notice a particular distinction.

Often when stores group music they have an established Christian section. I don't know what they base their selections off of though. 30-40% of the metal bands alone could be placed there as well. The only difference is many "Christian" groups have lyrics more directly or openly Christian (maybe quoting scripture or speaking directly to God/Jesus), while other bands write more cryptically or obscurely even though they have the same Christian values. However, as a non-Catholic who attends a Catholic school and hear examples and discussions of "Christian" music straight from the source, it is hard not to draw a line between, say "Christian" rock and "regular" rock, although I know none exists. The Christian-genre-prefix, if you will, is useful to identify no-nonsense and direct Christian lyrics. Just don't look only in Christian-labeled music for those values, you can find them anywhere.

I'm a christian myself. I find that the only time the label 'christian music' should be used is on worship songs. That's the only place it really fits. Talking about religion in music has always been done whether by christians saying it's good, or atheists saying it's bad. And just because the members of a band are christians doesn't somehow make it christian music either. I don't understand why people feel the need to put it in that box.

one of my fave Christian rock bands Flyleaf is also very christian-like even though they try to avoid being labeled that.
