There a big difference between "bands that subscribe to Christianity" and Christian Rock imo. Most people in the anglosphere are at least nominally Christian so there are plenty of bands out there with members who subscribe to the religion. Christian Rock, though, is music which is made for the express purpose of promoting the religion, something most acts with Christian members don't generally do in their music.

The constituents of the list that I previously posted are bands that play rock music with Christian themes, but do not necessarily subscribe to Christianity, as the two are not mutually exclusive. Better? |

Er... I wasn't saying the wording wasn't to my liking, I was just making a point about the distinction between Christian Rock and bands that happen to be comprised of Christians. Just a comment that was related to something you said, nothing to get upset about.

I like P.O.D. quite a bit. For a nu metal band, they are pretty creative, using an impressive bundle of genre conglomerations to make something new and different. They can write songs expressing sadness, happiness, and pure prissiness. Quite good. I didn't think a whole lot of Skillet until I saw them live. Their music still ranges from meh to good, but DANG can they put on a show. Like, seriously. Awesome concert. Also, their drummer is a beast when soloing. Third Day has a lot of good stuff. They can do pop-, southern-, or even hard- rock. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are an AMAZING band, but they're definitely good. Relient K and TFC... meh. They're alright. Pretty generic pop punk fare. Nothing terrible, I guess. The rest... no. I've ALWAYS hated Petra. And I have not heard anything from Switchfoot or Jars Of Clay that I have liked. |

Funny about Petra. When I was a child, I got a walkman for my birthday. The only tape that I got with it was by Petra. An odd gift for a 7 year old, but I appreciated it none the less. It was the first piece of music that I ever owned. So regardless of how good their music is, I will always have a spot for them in my music library. |

I don't think I'm on board with christian rock. It seems ironically souless. I can't get behind it. I love the idea of blood gushing from the wounds just as much as anyone would, but translate that into a beat? Please...

Jake Hamilton, my current favorite new worship artist. His writing on (most) of his songs is simply awesome. He takes influences from electronica, country, metal, classical, and occasionally has spoken word "breakdowns." Definitely at the forefront of creativity for Christian artists today.
This song is one of his heavier, and definitely fits the "rock" category. But it is a heartfelt cry out to God, really showing that worship isn't so much about playing music on a stage as it is communicating with your own creator. Take a listen. PS- I do say MOST of his songs are great. Some of them are just meh. But still better than most, if not all Christian rock. |

Heh... I remember Petra from wayyy back. I thought they were crap, even as a kid. Probably because I hated all things religious though. Never had an inkling to listen to Christian rock from that point on. I did, however, get into some Christian pop punk bands in the '90s, like Slick Shoes, Ghoti Hook, etc... but I think they were less "Christian" and more "I want to be on Tooth & Nail records".
Never really cared much about the concept after that. But honestly, if a band starts preaching to me, I don't think I'd dig it all that much. Religion has nothing to do with my life or interests. |
