So you classify your metal based on how they compare to The Carpenters? I'll be honest, this is the first time I'm hearing of this method.

Well, tell me how you classify your metals?

Shrieking vocals + distorted guitars + fast tempos + lo-fi recording + progressive song structures = black, death, goth, viking, power, speed, etc. etc. etc. METAL

So if I record a metal song using good production it's one genre but if I record it using minimal production it's another?

Mondo Bungle 05-01-2015 05:15 PM

Listen for yourself

And do you need me to post 7,000 awesome black metal bands that don't wear makeup for you? Cuz I can

And how does it differ from Black Doom, Pagan Metal, Viking Metal, and Shoegaze?

Black Metal:

Death Metal:

If you can't tell the difference then it's because you don't listen to either genre enough to have an ear for them, not because there isn't any.

I dunno about all that. Power metal is known for incredibly polished recordings I'd say. Pretty much two of those mainly deal with harsh vocals. Gothic metal ain't fast.

Nah. Just clearly define what makes it BLACK. And how BLACK differentiates itself from any of the other 7,000 metal genres.

Even then I'd think it'd be pretty easy to hear the differences, even for an absolute beginner.

He just can't handle the youth's evil killing music.

Sounds like two songs that could be from the same band on the same album. Yes, different, but also both pretty metal. Or do these sorts of bands have to have every one of their songs fit a metal "recipe" in order to confine to their respective genres?

I mean, f*ck. Is this 4 separate genres or is it just ROCK.

Just admit you're out of touch with extreme metal, cause those two songs sound absolutely nothing alike. If the two genres share similarities, it's because they have common roots, but they've since diverged into entirely different genres.

Mondo Bungle 05-01-2015 05:29 PM

Nah, if the band used someone else's vocals and got a different band behind him, they could definitely be on the same album.

Ninetales 05-01-2015 05:34 PM

I honestly thought chula was joking

Bull****.

So, if we were to break down Master of Puppets based on today's genre standards, how many different ones do the individual songs fit into?

Cause this:

Surely sounds nothing like this:

Mondo Bungle 05-01-2015 05:39 PM

Well they are different songs

Frownland 05-01-2015 05:39 PM

Getoffmylawncore

Chula Vista 05-01-2015 05:41 PM

So today's extreme metal bands choose a niche, pitch their tents, and then make sure every one of their songs will fit within the genre recipe?

F*ck that sh*t. Talk about painting yourselves into a corner.

Ninetales 05-01-2015 05:47 PM

what are you actually talking about lol

The Batlord 05-01-2015 05:47 PM

Yup. All these songs sound exactly alike. No differences.

I prefer this black metal song.

Mondo Bungle 05-01-2015 05:54 PM

To be fair, it's a lot closer than Cannibal Corpse
