I understand exactly what you mean. I guess in order to keep my music library simple and without TOO many genres n ****, I put anything that I have trouble deciding where to put it under progressive black/death/metal/rock/etc. basically anything I have trouble describing or finding other similar bands. thought i should justify that so i dont come across as a mindless idiot :P

Black metal+proggy death metal band I discovered. Not all of their songs have those black metal "wall of noise" riffs, though.

Definitely not anywhere close to being black metal of any sort. But I do know what you're talking about. I think it's heard better in the beginning of the first track from that same album. but yeah, Fallujah is definitely a progressive death band and a damn ****ing good one at that. I believe they're touring the USA with Oceano, Broken Hope, and Rivers of Nihil pretty soon

There's definitely a black metal quality if you know what to listen for. The riffing that begins at about 30 seconds in is a textbook black metal riff. Maybe you just aren't listening to the music closely enough?

I really don't care what you wanna call it. it's atmospheric, it's melodic, it has that classic ambient black metal vibe, it's apparent in parts of many of the songs off that album. After listening to it very closely since it's release and writing a review on the album some years ago, I think that it's safe to say that I've listened to the music closely enough. Have you heard the entire album? Because if you haven't, I highly suggest that you do, because if they're anything, they're technical death. But the reason why I personally consider them to be progressive is because of exactly what you pointed out; those spots of black metal ambience that they've PERFECTLY blended in with the technical chaos of the rest of their sound. I guess it was a bit impulsive of me to approach what you said in that way, maybe because it's not black metal ENOUGH for this thread? I don't know :P But that's my argument, I do 100% understand what you're talking about though. Would I consider the :30 riff to have a black metal sound? Absolutely not. It sounds more like Decrepit Birth (primarily their Polarity album) and Obscura more than anything else.

Hmm, I don't believe I ever said that they weren't "technical death metal", in fact one of the first things I said was that they were "proggy death metal". Of course I've listened to the entire album, that's why I said they don't always make use of black metal style riffing. I'm questioning whether you're actually listening to the music critically because you had a very cut and dry response, that it simply didn't resemble black metal in any way, which simply isn't true from an objective standpoint.

To me, it has nothing to do with the ambience, since that can be a quality of death metal as much as black metal, it's the riffing and chord progressions (essentially punk riffing) in certain parts. I would agree that the predominant influence on the album is death metal and prog, however I think it could potentially appeal to black metal fans as well for the reasons I've already stated.

You'll have to excuse how thick-headed I can be sometimes (not saying I intend to be), but I do love to make sure and listen to music from as many perspectives as I can. I guess I'll have to take your suggestion and listen to the music from a black metal perspective when I get the chance. When I brought up the term "black metal" when talking to their vocalist about their music, I remember him instantly butting in and saying "not really.....more so atmosphere than anything." I guess I was taken by surprise since Fallujah is a band that I would never expect to be in a black metal thread xP but thank you for showing your perspective!

As of the atmosphere, I feel that the atmosphere and ambience found in black metal is a lot different and much more unique than the types that can come from death metal.

Nah, I knew what you meant, I just don't really take genre classification all that seriously. All of the stuff that I'd consider metal is classified simply as "metal" on my iTunes for that reason. I usually only use sub-genre labels as a way to describe a musical theme to someone who hasn't heard the music.

I own a bunch of Black Metal that are hard to find information on. Bands like Archaic Winter, Cryptic Tales, Carrion Wraith, Old Wainds, Sator Marte, Black Mass and Waxen.
