The dudes in Darkthrone didn't partake in any Direct Action and in my mind are in fact the logical continuation of Bathorys 'black metal phase' more then a lot of the other True Norwegian Black Metal bands.

Euronymous was experimenting alot with his guitar so it sounded a lot different from Quorthons. Varg was screaming more then Quorthon too. Only Darkthone remained totally on track with Bathory's original trajectory.

I was hoping for a bigger black metal influence on this album but there's only one or two songs that show this influence. This album certainly isn't reinventing the wheel and could even be a sign that this particular style has reached it's limitations, although I could be proved wrong when Les Discrets release their new album pretty soon.
Ha I didn't even consider the backlash that could possibly arise from me posting about Alcest in the black metal thread. However, I suppose I'm in the same camp as you in how I feel about the album. I'd definitely say the new album is a step back from Escailles De Lune because there seemed to be a perfect equilibrium between the black metaly stuff and the shoe gazy/post-rocky stuff on that album. But that balance probably only exists because the album was only 6 tracks which I know irked a few people. While there are some beautiful moments on the new one, there are just as many dull ones. I'd say it's average.

Made a thread about this band here earlier, thought it might get more attention here. I'm interested to see what the proper black metal fans think of them.

Mamaleek are an experimental black metal duo from San Francisco comprised of two brothers who currently remain anonymous.

As I said, they make experimental black metal with influences ranging from jazz to middle eastern music. They also have a lot of their music under a layer of shoegaze-esque fuzz which I like.

I really like this music and I normally hate black metal.

Samples (quite abrasive to the ear):

I really love the drum work and energetic guitar melody on the first one and and the contrast between the fluttery piano and harsh guitar tones on the second track is just sublime.

Interesting.

There have been other 'experimental' Black Metal bands from San Francisco as well :

I've decided that I really like black metal. So far I've listened to Liturgy, Wolves in the Throne Room, Revenge, and a little bit of Darkthrone. What else should I look up?

PS Liturgy and WITTR have been my favourite so far.

Try:

(band - track)
Burzum - Jesus' Tod
Akitsa - Les Sentinelles (this band does do a wide variety of styles, however)
Beherit - The Gate of Nanna
Faustcoven - At Night They Rise from Beneath the Earth
Blasphemy - Empty Chalice
Archgoat - Goddess of the Abyss of Graves

edit: oh, try out "Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde" by Alcest as well.

1st Wave - Bathory, Hellhammer, and Celtic Frost to start off with.

2nd Wave - Burzum, Emperor, Darkthrone, Mayhem

3rd Wave - Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega, Alcest

Just off the top of my head.

Found this a couple months back, forgot about it, went through my favorites for old times sake, and I think I like it even more now. I wouldn't even know what to call it to be honest.

Holy ****, I knew about them for a little while now, but I've just discovered that Thorns are one of the sickest black metal bands in existence (no pun intended).
