I don`t really dig any type of symphonic metal, but thought the Dimmu Borgir album pretty good for a symphonic black metal album, not as good as the Therion album Theli though which I was listening to recently, which was symphonic but not symphonic black metal.
I have only heard their most recent few albums and I enjoy them quite a bit.

See, I don't even really like early Emperor all that much. It's cool, but nothing that get's my mojo going. Their last two albums were sexy as **** though.

Start with Bathory's first four albums. That's the easiest way for a beginner to start.
