Mastodon will never play a smooth Kenny G riff or Liberace piano roll in their arrangements. LOL. In all seriousness, I see your point, but Dailor is redefining the way metal drummers play by being the lead/solo instrument in many of their songs, leaving the guitars to anchor the rhythm. DT has the kind of standard "here's the drum part, here's the guitar solo...and lets not forget the woodwind/piano player." Though some parts sound like the band is playing backwards extremely fast, I think you'll find Blood Mountain very melodious, the more you listen to it. Remission has a more immediate appeal, very brutal and full of heavy riffs.

Yes, I have all of their albums, Blood Mountain is probably my favorite.
Seriously the only metal band from the past 15 years I've had a real interest in. |

Crack The Skye
Review of the new album even before it's out:-
Metal BUZZ » News » MASTODON: ‘Crack The Skye’ Reviewed Track-By-Track And the story behind the album that most of you will already know about:- http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/bla...sitemID=111659 With regard to the above "review", there are several disturbing things which makes the reviewer look like a complete hack. The f**king emo reference for starters. And calling Leviathan a "classic death metal album". And putting SOAD on the same level as Mastodon in terms of complexity is beyond a joke. I like SOAD but come on...they're nowhere near as complex as Mastodon. But I do kind of agree with his description of Blood Mountain in that it was a platform for the band to show the variety of their chops (after all the concept - the sights and delusions while climbing the mountain - was wide enough to make room for it) while Leviathan was much more focused (even though the subject matter of the entire album didn't restrict itself to Moby Dick). Anyway, I'll stop pissing myself off now. All we can get from this is basically a vague type of structure that we might expect from the album... |
