There's some nice little riff's hidden in there. I get the feeling Boo Boo might like that, has a sort of Proggish feel to it...

Mate listen to the whole of Leviathan and then, if even that doesn't do it for you, listen to Remission. On either one of the two (but particularly my favourite, Leviathan), if you do the whole album, I guarantee that even with your knowledge of metal, you'll have at least SOME positive feedback to give.

There's so much more going on in it though than the sick dueling guitar riffs and the interplay...Dailor's tempo-less drumming at parts pretty much applies the principles of free-jazz to metal.

The drumming on Seabeast is MAD.

voivod is pretty awesome but i can't help but laugh a bit anytime i hear them. i guess growing up as a french canadian it's easier for me to hear the slight accent that comes through in their vocals every now and again. their cover of astronomy domine is golden.

Agreed on Leviathan.

I don't understand why Mastodon catches flak from the metal crowd... maybe it's the non-metal influences that piss them off? Either way, I quite like them.

Some people say Dailor overplays and that Mastodon songs are just drum solos, but I think it's part of their sound... it really gives it a dynamic feel.

I might see them on the Unholy Alliance tour. My mate really wants me to go and the prospect of them and Slayer is very tempting.

Exactly! And ironically, it's often people who claim to be well-versed in prog and jazz etc who say those sorts of things! The idea behind Dailor's drumming is to create a sort of quasi (and sometimes genuine) tempoless feel to the music, as if to create a free jazz aesthetic. You either like it or you hate it, but slating it because it's "overplayed" TOTALLY misses the bleedin' point.

I think it's awesome how he'll almost like just go into this mad frenzy and hit every single thing in sight and still somehow find the pocket.

I know I have been recommended other albums but I am replaying Blood Mountain at the moemnt. There is no doubt that he is a talented drummer but I find it kind of ironic that this is tolerated and yet Dream Theatre are almost universally dissed. I see many similarities in arrangements and approach to songs. Many seem to be built around specific drum tracks or guitar tracks thus rendering them excersises in technical ability whilst losing sight of the song aspect.

The arrangements may change but there is not one single riff on this album that makes me go fuck yeah!

One of metal's foremost dynamics is the riff, the hook and this album (minus the drumming) has been done a thousand times before.

I certainly don't dislike it though and look forward to Leviathan!
