Oh, I can handle change no problem. For example, I'm a massive fan of Enslaved, and they've changed so much over the years, but I still love them to bits. If the change is still done well then not a problem, I just don't like their sound at all these days, and compared to the old stuff, it's not imaginative at all. I can handle diverse sounding bands as well, I'm into prog, black/death metal, grindcore, ambient, classical, jazz, all sorts of things... Just, well, nah, this album really doesn't grab me at all.

I just bought Blood Mountain and I'm really enjoying it. They are technically superior to most of the other metal bands today that I've heard. I'm really digging the riffs and the drummer is awesome. My only drawback is the lyrics. They get to be a little to "epic" and it doesn't seem like the band spent much time on them. Overall , though, it's one of the best metal albums that have come out in the past few years.

Probably my favourite metal band.
No idea what my favourite album is, i'd say it isn't unreasonable to say they're one of the more consistent bands around today. For me Mastodon albums are some of the few metal albums that remain fresh throughout, brilliant riffs and i don't think the drumming needs to be complimented again.
A current top 5:

1. Bladecatcher
2. I Am Ahab
3. Crusher Destroyer
4. Blood and Thunder
5. Where Strides the Behemoth

Oh dear. We agree on something else. This is the best metal band there is in this decade bar none. The riffs, counterpoint and interplay between the twin guitars is unbelievable, and the use of tempo-less drumming almost seems to suggest the application of the principles of free jazz to metal. On top of that, the sheer amount of genre territory they scale and the fused results are often jaw-dropping. This is a band that people will either get, or just will not and instead see them as just another metal band.

You can't really go wrong with a band named after a prehistoric beast.

I got to love my hometown Atlanta band, actually I've been in company a few times of Jim Stacey who 'stars' in 2 of Mastadon's videos - most famously, Blood & Thunder (I'm friends with one person that is in the crowd). Yeah, I do have to admit besides Black Lips, Mastadon is easily the peak of all Atlanta music.

I can understand the criticism regarding the singing, the guy didn't plan on being the lead singer but they had trouble filling the position. Even there best known song Blood & Thunder features a guest vocalist (not Jim Stacey on the video as it appears it is).

Some of my favorite songs in no particular order:
"Aqua Dementia"
"Blood and Thunder"
"Burning Man"
"Call of the Mastodon"
"Colony of Birchmen"

Mastodon is awesome. I've liked all of their records and each one always has something slightly different. I'm looking forward to hearing their next record.

They are another band who a lot of people decided they didn't like merely due to the hype.

BBBBBBUT... to be fair, I would agree that they truly are a very acquired taste. I didn't like Blood Mountain for at least the first 7 or 8 listens (or rather liked only a few tracks). It took me a lot of listens to finally decide that I loved the whole lot. And imo Leviathan is even better and has some of the most crushing duelling riffs I've ever heard.
