I think a Frank Zappa analogy is stretching it, but i get where you're coming from. I'd say the same thing about Mastodon, though, because most people i know IRL who listen to metal never really like Mastodon (but instead, bands like SOAD).

As someone who is a fan of Mastodon now and was a fan of System of a Down in middle school and high school but doesn't bother with them anymore, I find the SoaD hate a little surprising. I found their discography to be full of goodies. They're a bit political at times but still know how to make solid tracks. I didn't care for their most recent album with BYOB on it as much as their older works, but I didn't discredit them. I dunno what the point is except they're not that bad. Just not as fun to listen to (anymore?) as Mastodon is.

I'd call myself a System Of A Down fan. I don't see any reason to discredit them, I think they made really fun, interesting alt-metal.

Mastodon are far superior a band, though.

Mesmerise and Hypnotise are pretty boring, but Steal This Album! and Toxicity are pretty damn good

Your constant comparisons of Mastodon to A7X truly hurts my heart, friend. Mastodon has never been Pop Metal to me and maybe that means I'm getting too old for this shit.

I still consider them closer to stuff like Neurosis and ISIS than any of the bands you mentioned. They certainly used to be.

Anyway, I was trying to find footage on YT about the head injury but couldn't.
This video is fun though.

I didn't mean their whole career has been similar to A7X, just the new joint. There's definitely Neurosis in their sound and maybe ISIS, i haven't heard them sooo much. But definitely Neurosis, Sabbath, and all the good metal. I loooove Mastodon, at least up to Crack the Skye. The new stuff is still ok, and it's still Mastodon, but i don't think it's Mastodon at its best.

I like your opinion but I still want T-Rex Jesus to come back. Why? WHY?
