I like the vocals too, at least considering screaming metal vocals. I've heard a lot of complaints too.

After hearing so much about this band from my friends, I decided to give them a listen. I just put "The Hunter" on my iphone, but is there anything else they've done I should check out?

There's merit in all their releases, really; it depends on what stage you like them best in.

Mastodon started out really sludgy with Remission, but they've seen a paradigm shift towards a more progressive sound with each album, peaking at Crack the Skye. If I were to assign each album an arbitrary "sludge"/"prog" value, it would look like this
Remission: 9/1 Leviathan: 7/3 Blood Mountain: 5/5 Crack the Skye: 2/8 The Hunter: 5/5 So what you get out of each album really depends on what kind of metal you prefer. |
