I like most of their music but Remission remains my clear favorite. I like "shorter songs" but "epic chorus/hook" sounds truly frightening.
Does this mean I should pass on the new one? I love Mastodon so if the new stuff's bad I don't even want to hear it.

I like Blood Mountain well enough. But the previous ones are best and CtS is okay. So should I subject myself to the new one or what?

the new one is like a softer, more accessible CtS

it's certainly not as heavy as BM, if that's what you were asking

With the choruses, I think they were just trying to address criticism about their vocals and they certainly dealt with it as the vocals are top notch. However, this doesn't mean that they shirked everything else. The guitar work is EXCELLENT as is Dailor's drumming. There's a lot to like in the new album, there just won't be sludge pooling around your body after giving the album a listen.

I really like Curl of the Burl myself, it's not the Mastodon i know and love but it's so fun and still a really good metal song.

THE ALBUM IS STILL NOT MINE. i don't want a download though, this is one i wanna buy. and i won't be seeing them at voodoo fest anymoar. :c

Love this band, they are unique, I like their progressive vibe. I have some difficulty with the vocals, but the instruments and ambiance is awesome.

Leviathan is one of their best album, Blood and Thunder is a classic song.

Man, I love the vocals. What's got you questioning it?
