I don't see that personally, at least not Blood Mountain. At least it would have fit in with my least favorite songs on Blood Mountain. It just sounded like A7X to me, annoyingly so.

Well that was the main thing that hinted at it, but that's a staple/defining part of A7X. The song progressed too slowly for me too, and not enough; a lot of the songs on Blood Mountain (at least the best ones) had a lot of different parts/motifs/sections involved, while Black Tongue was fairly linear. Good mysterious single material, like a teaser er sumthin, but as a song on the album and alone i found it pretty weak. Curl of the Burl wasn't too bad at all to me, i loved those opening lines, but it just oozed Ozzie solo. Not really a bad thing, but they need to stick to their more proggy/raw sound.
imo

I'm personally resigned to the fact that Mastodon has sold out. Of course everybody is going to call me a hipster or tell me that every good band progresses, but I'm sorry, what I heard on crack the skye was debatable... This new album is not debatable, it's a step below radio rock.

^ I'd have to disagree with the Crack The Skye. I prefer Blood Mountain. People tend to overlook that album for some reason, but I think that it's miles above Crack The Skye. Leviathan is absolutely their best album hands down though, so I'll agree there..

I'm torn between Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye as being their best albums. On a technical level, I can appreciate that Blood Mountain definitely exceeds Crack The Skye, but Crack The Skye is an album that hits me emotionally, mostly because of the underlying theme of Brann's sister's suicide.
