Hmm, I find the albums where they're most comparable to Sabbath to be the middle two, especially Leviathan.

And I'm not sure how I feel about this news. I really hope Mastodon don't lose their edge. I was perfectly fine with the more mellow, proggy sound of Crack The Skye, but this album isn't supposed to be as proggy.

I definitely agree that Blood Mountain had the Sabbath sound, but i always thought Crack the Skye did too, or at least more classic metal similar to Sabbath. I don't see it as much in Leviathan, but at the same time, i haven't listened to Leviathan as much.

Hard Mastodon is cool with me; Remission has been my favorite recently. But it's the producer that especially scares me. They should go back to Matt Bayles, they were a good fit. O'Brien was good on Crack the Skye, but the mellow stuff is his specialty.

I wonder if they're shaking off the conceptual format with this one

I've been under the impression that they're gonna dial it back to Blood Mountain-level conceptual sh#t as opposed to Crack The Skye.

Is Blood Mountain a little less directly story following than Crack the Skye? What makes it less conceptual like?

Personally I'd love a general concept album like Remission was. But I've just been in love with it recently so maybe i'm biased. I need to get back on Crack the Skye, but I just never get around to it. Nor Leviathan. imawful.

Love the instrumental and original of "The Czar ". Crack the Skye is my favorite of theirs. My least favorite is probably Remission, but it's just not so much my style.

It is a huge split in style (well in most aspects), but i think some of the jams/instrumental sections on Crack the Skye can be as elegant and skillful as Crack the Skye. The Czar's probably my favorite song on the album too, besides Divinations, and the title track grew on me too, with the back and forth between Scott Kelly and the band. He works really well on their songs.

I have such a love/hate relationship with Crack the Skye. Artistically, it's an amazing album, but the production is terrible!

What makes the production terrible? I thought it worked pretty smoothly, but i don't know production well at all.
