I don't know about the OPs "metallica and rush combined" description, but Mastodon rocks.
If you listen to Leviathan and aren't into it, then you could go either direction and either try Remission or Crack the Skye, but I think between those three and Blood Mountain most people who are into metal will find something they like. |

Well there was a lot of madness going on outside of the club he was playing, like b!tches yellin and hollerin at their roadie brother and carrying on about going back to LA or Atlanta or something. Then nobody went to see his projects whom he was playing with at the time (because of course Mastodon won't come here), so that probably pissed him off. And then, when he did come outside, he was talking to a manager i presume about money, probably not having enough of it like he was promised. Or something.
Anyway, a security guard and guys with the band/crew saw my ladyfriend and i outside and they knew we'd been waiting for a loooong time (about 2 hours by the time we got the autograph), so they tried helpin me out. When Brent was finally done with his business, he walked right on by me even though i was holding a CD and a sharpie; i was looking away at the moment. So i gave up by now, but this tall smooth headed dood talked to the folks in Brent's van and called me back. They passed the CD into the van and then it was passed back to me with Brent Hinds' signature on my Crack the Skye CD! I'll take a picture of it to show y'all some time. I actually saw the security guard at the Against Me! show that came here, he was my buddy. But yeah, that's what happened. Oh, I know what i love about Blood Mountain: It had an especially Progressive Metal sound that was the line just before they got into the whole grand Classic Metal sound on Crack the Skye. Bladecatcher is such a blast to listen to. Divinations is realllly good too though, as is Crack the Skye and the Czar.

I think Mastodon have a gritty ass Black Sabbath sound, at least on their last two albums. The first two are pretty unique sounding, as far as the metal i've heard goes. Barroness has a fairly similar sound, but more in the way of the last two albums.

That's weird man. Hinds was pretty chill when I met him. Well the whole band was chill as **** when I met them. IDK probably just a bad day for him.

Big NEWS! I don't know if you guys have heard, but Mastodon are back in the studio, and have released two song titles from the album ("Blasteroids" and "All the Heavy Lifting"), and their producer is Mike Elizondo, whose track record sounds both intriguing and terrifying for the band. While i like the diversity, he sounds too poppy and not rocky for Mastodon, and he produced A7X's last album. Judging by the singles, it's A7X's worst album EVERRRRR (i do kinda like them though).
Opinions. PS: This is all wikipedia'd.
