I think both "Remission" and "Leviathan" were interesting rather than great, with too much emphasis on instrumentation ability than just writing great songs. saying that though, I loved the jazzy style drumming of Brann Dailor on those albums. "Blood Mountain" on the other hand is a great album with a great level of consistency throughout. I especially love the song "Colony of Birchmen"

I think what I like about Crack The Skye is how uplifting it can be at times, but Leviathan does a great job of pairing concept with music. A great example is Aqua Dimentia. The opening guitar riff totally paints the mental picture of some crazy underwater struggle.

Does anyone here fully "get" Remission? I keep trying to convince myself that it's an awesome album and it just needs more listens, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most difficult works I've tried to make myself love.
I love Crusher/Destroyer, March Of The Fire Ants and Ol'e Nessie, but the rest seems far too dissonant and directionless.

It's still my favorite album of theirs. It came after the mess of early songs on which they got to know each other musically I guess. It's also probably my favorite metal engineering by Matt Bayless who I think sortra ruined a lot of good albums with his overly muddy sound. But I think Bayless's finest work may be Remission. And Mastodon's too. I like the next 3 albums but I call Remission my favorite - most listened to for sure. I like metal to be a good combination of skill and raw aggression, and my preferred ratio isn't fully present on other Mastodon albums. It's there in certain moments on all the later albums but not ever as consistently as on Remission.
