While I like all of their albums, Crack the Skye was probably my favorite. Just an extremely cohesive album that blends together Mastodon's trademark sludgy sound and flair for experimentation with classic rock. My favorite album of last year, although I might be biased because I got to see them perform the whole album live and I touched Brent Hind's foot.

Agreed. I prefer Leviathan and Blood Mountain over Crack the Skye, but I acknowledge the new album for it's success and experimentation. It's just not why I liked them to begin with. As for best album of the year, I believe that goes to Isis' Wavering Radiant.

I'm the same but I place Remission higher than Leviathin. Although if I want a more 'musical' experience then I'll go to Leviathin or Blood mountian, I still think Remission is their most powerful. Also, Wavering Radiant, to me, is far better than Crack the Skye, if they need to be compared.

We must move to the Isis thread if we're going to rant about Wavering Radiant, though. EDIT: Wait, have we already met? |

Definitely do your best to go see them man. They were playing here last weekend and I totally regret not going to see them. Even if I didn't like Crack the Skye as much they're still one of the few artists that comes to town that I actually like.

As for Mastodon, one thing they have in common with Isis is using Matt Bayles as sound engineer on most of their albums until recent ones. He helped both bands make some of their best albums but I hadn't noticed that he muddied up both of their sounds quite a bit. It worked well, but both bands seem to have been let loose with bigger, better production after Bayles was gone. I think he engineered every Mastodon album until CtS (their worst in my opinion but still good). Mastodon is one of few bands that compel me to buy their albums as close to the release date as I can. Every Mastodon CD I have from Remission onward is accompanied by an entertaining DVD that shows at least some live performances and the last two have had little documentaries about the making of the albums. Highly interesting DVDs that help me justify paying the price (the album artwork is always worthwhile too)
