This album's really pretty great, all considered. Beautiful guitar melodies, intricate rhythms, crushing riffs, fine textures, and brilliant structure. What more could you want? This album shows commendable musical growth and, I'd go so far as to say, a welcome change of direction given that I'm not sure how much more they could do under the previous regime.

So I just found a torrent of their new album with a massive amount of seeds, so I decided to go ahead and get it. I'll edit back later with an opinion. I hope it won't dissapoint.

I've only heard one song so far-Oblivion, and I honestly don't know how I feel about it.

I suggest listening to the album in its entirety before you figure out how you feel about it. Read the review for it in Album Reviews.

Yeah, I'll give'r a listen, so far Mastodon has delivered, even though they have been very different album to album.

I'm liking the new album after a couple of plays. However I feel like the drums could be a bit louder in the mix, they don't sound crisp and hard-hitting enough to me.

I initially also had a problem with the vocals, sound a bit corporate and the different backup vocals reminded me of typical dual metalcore vocals. I got that impression more on the first listen than the second, though.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

Corporate, really? Hmm. To each his own, I don't hear that at all. More polished, yeah, but not corporate. I think the vocals sound better on this one than any of the previous records.

I didn't mean that the album sounds corporate, just that the backup vocals sounded like the kind of secondary/dueling vocals you hear in a lot of commercial metalcore and screamo. Just the backup vocals, not the album as a whole.

My only complaint about the sound of the new album is that the high end (cymbals etc.) sounds terrible like the engineer was trying to make them sound low-fi or something. Everything else about the recording is stunning.
