I think Appetite is in a totally different league to anything Soundgarden did.
Not to go band bashing or anything, but I'm still looking for the appeal in GnR. To me they sound pretty much like any other hard rock band with a singer who'd be more at home with Angus Young than Slash.

I don't know about that. If you were an objective person (as I like to incorrectly think of myself) then I would take your word for classic albums in genres I'm not familiar with. If you told me some black goth death metal album is classic, I would trust you.

Not saying you are either, just my experience with it.
*nods*

Yep, it's just tired and been done before, James. You need a different shtick!

Okay, but I am very familiar with grunge so why don't you take my word for it that Badmotorfinger is not a classic grunge album?

Yeah, well you won't label Blood Sugar Sex Magik as classic either...

Right. And why won't you trust me on that either? I've been listening to the Chili Peppers a lot longer than you, clearly I'm the expert here.

Edit: are you really in Luxembourg now?

You've been listening to music for longer than me. I'll just pick up a new hobby.

And yes, I'm studying here for the semester. It's a program offered at Miami. So far it has been very different and cool but also very challenging...

That sounds fantastic! I always wished I could have studied abroad when I was in college.

For me the difference is that they transcend their genre in ways that none of the other glam bands did. First of all, they were more eclectic, took more risks and were much more likely to release music that deviated from the hair metal template than their peers. Also, they transcended the genre by being simply higher quality. From their lyrics to the quality of their songwriting GnR were able to convey a dark, painful underside to all the glitz and partying of that era while all the other bands were writing music which by comparison simply amounted to surface-level party-boy posturing. And the last thing they had over their peers was vision. They made albums that attempted to be great albums, not just collections of songs. They built up little themes and mythologies that ran between multiple tracks to album art and videos as well, and they tried to be something that was just... well... more expansive than their peers.
